The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

What are you thoughts on this?

As I am really into 12 Strings, I think this is a great move. It was an awesome guitar back in it's day and having had the chance to play it, I think they have done it again.

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

you already know my answer but I'll be first to reply anyways. I think that is one of the coolest guitars and am dying to try one out for myself. I know I am going to have to crank it up thru a tube amp and do some old school stairway to heaven stuff. Love the look and love the idea of a stand alone 12 string SG instead of that really heavy double neck

I remember seeing a 12 string melody maker from the 60s at a guitar show and wanted to try it out but the dealer was a jerk so I didn't bother. When my local store gets a 12 string SG in, I am headed for that private reserve room to give it a good workout. I can't afford to buy one right now but will give it heck playing it anyway ;D

cool, i would like one to but it would probably be a few months time before the distributor even ships some in here.

It is my understanding these will be an extremely limited production item. Now that may be dependent on the number of orders they get...........

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

the distributors here only just got the LP tribute series, no mention of the SG tribute yet.
so looks like its going to be awhile longer before the 12-string SG appears here, or even at all.

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

I want one! The EDS-1275 is far too big and unwieldy for me to play in my wheelchair and this seems like the ticket for me to get the Page "Stairway to Heaven" 12-string sound. And, with a Janglebox, I'm sure it will be killer on Beatles, Byrds, Petty, R.E.M. and similar stuff. Unfortunately, affording it will require me letting go of one or more of my current stable. But it would be worth it, methinks.

I've heard the Janglebox is way cool - particularly for that Byrds sound.

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

I bought a jangle box soon after I bought my Rickey 360-12. McGuinn recommended it on his website so I thought who would know better. I also love the chime I get in my Teles with it.

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

I can't afford the SG-12 but I can probably swing for a Janglebox and I do own 2 Teles. I've heard the JB and also have seen McGuinn's recommendation.

Incidentally, McGuinn also recommends the Roland JC-120 as the best amp for his sound.

I could live with just the Roland. I can always get the dirt with my ME-70.

But I'd miss my AC-30 -- all 70 lbs. of it.

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

Awesome, I want one! I played an old Rickenbacker 12 electric once and it was very cool. Bet the SG sounds great...dirt & a 12 string is so cool.

Hey, welcome to ETSG sgJonison! The Gibson 12 does sound great!!! I agree to the 12 and dirt can sound good, but I also point out that it sounds great clean or with a chorus pedal......... 8) 8) :coolsmiley:

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

Sometimes I put my Takamine 12 through my blues deville and its not electric but twelves can do amazing bluesy things with dirt. I'd love to get an electric 12, actually I wish I could afford the Jimi Page 6 and 12 now that would be sweet.

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

After much thought, one of these is my newest acquisition. I put the money down today, supposedly the last on the list for the July shipment to Guitar Center. Saved 15%, too. But, I figure since there's probably 100,000 6 string SGs (maybe more?) compared to every standalone SG 12-string, that I can't go wrong with this choice.

Yeah I'm a newb around here, but I will tell you I have loved SG's above all other guitars since probably 1989, so it's not like I just discovered SG's. Always more to learn, no doubt....

Thanks, good to be here. I've been ducking in here and there, figured I might as well participate. I'm very much looking forward to the 12 string's arrival. My imagination runs wild at the sounds I anticipate from it. I've been eyeballing a lot of guitars this year, esp. SG's, and when the 50th anniversary stuff came out it really changed things up. The 24 fret and Krieger guitars look very nice as well (but how do you hear all of them?). Wouldn't it be nice if they offered a three-pack discount deal? 8)

Re: The 50th Anniversary Gibson SG 12 String

Dig it! Mine arrived last Thursday. Earlier that day i swear my heart sped up when I saw a charge from GC from a few days earlier on my cc account, then when I about tripped over it on my front porch heading out...well, you might know how it feels to be a kid on Christmas again! I've been too busy playing it to post my thoughts here, but I have had it in mind! I intend on doing a bit of a review if I can put it down for long enough.

Between now and then, who can say what is different on this SG 12, shown above of Forza's (like mine too), than the official Gibson advertised model? Forza, I bet you have noticed, so you don't count. Little things like this are curious of Gibson, is all I will say.

Off to play it some more....
