Billy Gibbons on an SG

From the latest episode of Live From Daryl's House:

Episode 63: Billy Gibbons :: Live From Daryl's House with Daryl Hall :: Current Episode

Apparently it is called "Lil' Red"

Some of the best guitar tones I've heard from Billy G. Good stuff !

Interesting. I think an SG is the only model of guitar I haven't seen Billy play... until now. I like how he's always got some extra twist on a traditional design going on with all his guitars.

I love the look of an uncovered sideways vibrola on an SG. But holy cow, with all the parts all polished like that... Wow.

What really blows my mind is he plays with 7's! Kind of throws the whole idea of fatter, heavier gauge strings gives you a fatter tone! His rig rundown video is really good as well, where his tech goes through his guitars.

Yes, it amazes me as well. SGs are already the easiest guitars in the world to play, so Billy's one must be lighter than air beneath the fingers.

I love watching him play. He just looks so smooth and effortless. I get to excited when I play and get ham-fisted and could never play with 7's, let along 8's. I have 10's on my SG, and 9-46's on my Tele, and that was an adjustment!

I'm pleased to see that there are some fans of Billy Gibbons here. From past comments about him by others I used to think that he was not a topic for current discussion. Refreshing to see there are others that admire his talent and accomplishments.
SG John likes this.

I'd never knock the man. Seen ZZ Top, and it was quite a show.

Hell, I play with 7s, sometimes!

Yep, he is the quintessential Texas bluesman .
And if they do come out with his sig SG,
my missus' jewelry box may get lighter still!

Saw him in the 70's, with Humble Pie opening. I have always been a fan. In the eighties, I drifted away from them. I wasn't into sequenced drums, etc.

If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have lusted after a '58 Flying V and Gretsch Billy-Bo, then build my own to satisfy the itch. Now, I just need to control myself, and not pinstripe my new '61 Les Paul Re-Issue.

Hey, your personal account of his good behavior changed my mind.

Besides, so he plays w/ 7's and I don't. So what?

Which one of us is in a tiny CA town and which one is a world-famous rock star....hmmmmmm.......

So I have a new "admir[ation for] his talent and accomplishments"

Let me say this....
If Gibson ever does a run of those, my savings account may be in serious
trouble.
Introduced myself a couple weeks ago, but have been absent since then, due to work. I figured this was a good chance to re-introduce myself. That, and I couldn't not comment on Billy's SG.
I was wondering if there are any specs on it. P/U's, and only (1) control knob?
Sharp looking guitar.

Single knob, no switch.

I like it.

But I would never buy a signature guitar. I want to create my own. This one brings up some interesting ideas, though.

ETA: I do own a Wayne's World Strat, buy I didn't realize it when I bought it. It was just the best Strat in the shop.

Folks were speculating on TGP that it is an SG Original that was custom modified for Billy.

Single knob and no pickup selector? So are one of those pickups (most likely the neck) just a dummy and no wired up?

Anybody think of a "pull pot" in there?

Or a neck/bridge blend switch.

Because it is Billy, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if only the bridge pickup is wired.

I'm almost certain is a stock guitar that's had the tremolo chrome/nickel plated and had the pinstripes added. You can see where the screw holes were from the pick guard.
