Horny Devils

If you are a player of a certain age then the chances that an SG was the first "real" guitar you got your hands on - and if you're 17 and in a punk band you might well be playing one, too. This sculptured, high-power classic has been driving rock, pop and blues for 40 years and more. Tony bacon has the Inside story of Gibson's slimmed-down rocker...

Mahogany Rush

In the past there were only a handful of SG models so you'd simply choose the one you could afford. These days Gibson and Epiphone make 24 - everything from vintage reissues to Signature models and cheapies with bolt-on necks. HUW price samples seven of the best.

Imagine the scenario. Seven boxes arrive and excited fingers pull out a large representative chunk of the Gibson/Epiphone SG range. There they are lying on your carpet, your amp's warmed up and ready to go - so which one are you going to pick up...the Korean one or the '61 Standard? It's obvious, really, so let's start with 'the best' and work out what we lose as we slide down the wonga scale....

Solid Gone: Great SG Players

It's funny, but of all the great guitarists ever to play an SG, very few stuck with the model throughout a full career... save for Angus Young and Tony Iommi, of course. Of those who jumped ship, it's also odd how their adoption of an SG coincided with some of the best playing of their careers. Santana, Townshend, Mick Taylor... did swapping to a Yamaha or a Les Paul really lift their playing to another level? We would venture that it did not, but hey, there's always time to change back again. But discarding such idle speculation, we here offer a list - in no particular order, mind - of some of the greatest SG players to strut their way upon life's wide stage. Disagree? Of course you do. Write to us, and tell us who we should have included...

New Gibson SG Guitars Debut at 2006 NAMM

Utilizing innovative designs while drawing on the rich history of the company, the new guitars include the genre-specific Menace models, the high-performance GT line and the beautiful and functional Goddess series.

Designed to encourage and meet the needs of female guitarists, the Goddess is a high-quality, professional guitar with a lighter body and slimmer neck. With lightweight designs and fast-action necks, the models feature powerful 490R and 498T humbuckers for all the performance and tone that Gibson is known for. Comfortable, beautiful, and powerful, the Goddess will prove to be an exciting new option for all players.

Made by musicians for musicians, the SG-GT is tough, road-ready, and versatile. Built to maximize the tonal options available to a working guitarist, the GT features push/pull pots on coil-split 490R and 498T humbuckers, independent volume controls in the middle position, and a high-pass tone filter. Add to that sonic palette a dual truss rod with extra neck reinforcement, a Neutrik™ jack lock, and Dunlop strap locks, and the GT proves to be one of the most durable and adaptable guitars ever built.

Fans of glam rock and metal will love the stark, punishing New Century and Menace series. They feature the high-powered 490R and 498T humbuckers. The New Century SG is complete with full-faced mirror pickguards to catch stage lights. At the other end of the spectrum are the none-more-black SG Menaces, with brass knuckle and fist inlays and tribal body routings. Both series offer total performance instruments for the most extreme players.

In the early '60's Gibson came up with a radical new guitar to inject a shot of adrenaline into the Les Paul line. They named the new guitar SG which stood for Solid Guitar, which is one of the biggest inside jokes in the guitar industry....sort of like saying Angus Young and Tony Iommi are just solid guitarists!

Now Epiphone offers a faithful reproduction of the classic Gibson guitar in a vintage finished, affordable package! One run up the 22 fret neck of the Vintage G-400 and you'll be hooked! The "Worn" finish gives the instrument the look and feel of the originals and the high-output designed in the U.S.A. pickups complete the hard rockin', vintage vibe! Check it out below:

An interview with Tony Iommi: Ozzfest impressions (weather), new Black Sabbath album (maybe), Gibson Custom and Epiphone signature models (loves them), and more

Just a few hours before Black Sabbath's Ozzfest show in Tampa (Sept. 2), guitarist Tony Iommi's thoughts were on the weather - and it wasn't just because hurricane Frances had caused their scheduled tour finale in Miami to be cancelled. Weather had made the entire Ozzfest tour a different experience for him. "It's been going very, very well, much the same as all the others, really," he said. "The only thing slightly different is the weather. We've had a few iffy days. It's amazing how the fans will all stand out there when it's raining like nothing was happening." SG Les Pauls Classic shape that filled big shoes... for awhile

In 1961, Gibson replaced its Les Paul series with a new line of lightweight, ultrathin, all mahogany, double-cutaway solidbodies - the SG (for solid guitar).  Developed under the aegis of Ted McCarty and introduced as the "new Les Paul," the SG heralded new directions and a new marketing emphasis for Gibson; trends exemplified only two years later with the introduction of the radical Firebird guitars and Thunderbird basses, available in custom colors.

The SG Standard model, centerpiece of its line, is a Cherry Red guitar, and early-'60s examples with factory finishes in other colors are not very common.  Original '61/'62 Les Paul Standard model SGs (LP/SGs) in colors other than red are even more rare.  Read the entire article here .

Guitar Player magazine features Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths, is featured in the February issue of Guitar Player magazine holding a 1963 Gibson SG/Les Paul.

Marr shares a "song first" mentality with George Harrison -- who, not surprisingly, is one of his influences -- but Marr's layered guitar textures, odd chords, and stunning melodic lines tend to both support a composition and call attention to themselves. Witness the goose bump inducing slide intro of the Smith's "How Soon is Now?"  As an accompanist, he has played with the Pretenders, Bryan Ferry, Paul McCartney, and others.

'Loved one' buried with Gibson SG as Skynyrd's 'Freebird' plays on
by Reno Kling

You know, of course, there's a great, rockin' band in heaven just waiting for you. So a Dayton, OH, man's final request was to be buried with his favorite Gibson SG. As the family filed past the casket, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" was played in his honor.

Funeral directors recognize a movement to nontraditional burial including cremation. Indeed, golfers who have played their last earthly round can rest eternally in an urn in the shape of a golf bag. "We like to think families are like a snowflake or fingerprint; no two are alike," says Tommy Routsong of Dayton's Routsong Funeral Homes. "We try to customize each funeral to meet the family's need." Not only that, it's plain good business. "We've been around for fifty years and we want to comply with the wishes of our customers," Ralph Blye, funeral director at Smith Funeral Home says. "Everything is changing and we have to change with the time."

Can't you see and hear it now? "Dearly departed, we are gathered here together . . . ."

Why Did Les Paul want his name off the SG?

A friend of mine saw Les Paul play at the Iridium in New York and asked him that very question.
There where 3 technical factors.. and 1 funny one.

  1. When he did fast runs up the neck, the bottom horn always got in his way.
  2. He hated the neck.  He thought they were flimsy and not as stable from a tuning stand point.
  3. He liked the Mahogany body - maple cap construction of the les Paul better from a tone standpoint. In fact that's the same thing he didn't like about the old Les Paul Customs.
  4. He didn't want to do anything until Mary was out of the picture ( so she couldn't get part of the contract money).

And now you know !
