SG Standard P-90 Print E-mail
standard_p90A confirmed classic ever since its arrival in 1961, SGs of various types have been played by Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa, Robby Krieger, Angus Young, Derek Trucks, Jeff Tweedy, and countless other rock, blues and alternative artists. While the SG Standard's original specs included a pair of humbucking pickups, many players have always loved the hot, raw sound of single-coil P-90 pickups, as found on the SG Special and Junior guitars, which otherwise had more austere features. Now Gibson USA introduces the SG Standard With P-90s, which features all the appointments of the Standard model, but is equipped with a pair of authentic P-90 pickups. Finished in your choice of Heritage Cherry or Ebony Black—both in hand-sprayed, high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer—the SG Standard With P-90s brings together the features and electronics of two legendary SG models for the first time, and creates a timeless classic in the process.

Like the original SGs of the '60s and all of the classic variations since, the Gibson USA SG Standard With P-90s has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the iconic asymmetrical "double-horned" deep double-cutaway design (attractive Grade-A timber is used beneath the translucent finish of the Heritage Cherry guitars). A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled edge—a traditional part of this model's distinctive styling—the mahogany's light weight also enhances playing comfort. The guitar's quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a rounded profile that feels sublimely comfortable in the hand. It is glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed mortise-and-tennon neck joint, and topped with a baked maple fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets, dressed in vintage cream binding. Acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock logo and holly inlay, a five-ply late-'60s style pickguard, and a black truss-rod cover engraved with "SG" round out this eye-catching package.

duoSG Standard Exclusive

This sleek double-cutaway rocker had a slim, light body but no shortage of power, and the kind of fast playability that the guitar world had not previously experienced. Although the single-cutaway Les Paul that it had replaced would be back in play later in the '60s, the SG was here to stay, a new rock icon in its own right. Now Gibson USA presents a classically appointed SG with all of the tone, features and playability of the original vintage model, but dressed in two killer new nitrocellulose finishes: the SG Standard Sam Ash Exclusive, available in your choice of Bullion Gold with gold hardware, or Pelham Blue with chrome hardware. Dickey Betts SG Print E-mail

Splash-02

One of the most storied guitars in rock and roll history, the 1961/62 Gibson SG Standard given to Duane Allman by Dickey Betts during their playing days together, is an instrument of near-mythic proportions. Betts gifted Allman an SG so he didn’t have to wait while Duane re-tuned. Instead Allman could switch between the 1961/62 Gibson SG Standard and one of his Les Pauls. This guitar has long been feted as an iconic road warrior, and a classic tone machine. Now Gibson Custom has recreated this living slice of rock history in extremely limited numbers as the Dickey Betts “From One Brother to Another” SG. Produced in extremely limited numbers, with 75 examples hand-aged by Gibson Custom and signed by Betts, and another 250 featuring Gibson Custom's VOS (Vintage Original Spec) finish process and appointments, this model is an exacting reproduction of a stand-out SG from a golden age of guitar production. It offers the sublime tone and playing feel that these guitars are known for, with the looks of a hard-working legend.

The body of the Dickey Betts “From One Brother to Another” SG is constructed from one piece of genuine mahogany, carved to the historically accurate early ’60s SG shape with dual asymmetrical horns and beveled edges. A deep-set glued-in neck is carved from one piece of superior quarter-sawn mahogany and topped with a rosewood fingerboard with 22 “banjo frets” like the original. All examples are finished in genuine hand-sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer in Vintage Red; 75 of these will be meticulously hand aged to match the look of the original guitar, while a further 250 will be treated to Gibson Custom’s acclaimed VOS process, which exhibits the look of a gently aged and faded instrument. Details of the hand aging include the extreme fading and minor wear on the top of the SG, the ageing of all hardware and plastics, and considerable wear to the back of the neck, with minor dings and large patches of finish missing do to the heavy playing time this guitar experienced. All in all, the Dickey Betts “From One Brother to Another” SG accurately embodies the look and feel of the original 1961/62 SG given to Allman by Betts.
