    hi

    I m about to buy a 98 or 09 sg standard
Problem is i can,t check them at the same time.

    The 98 is 800 euros
    The 2009 is 700 euros

Is there any difference in quality?

With all things being equal condition wise, I'd take the '98

I'd go for the '98, the older the better! The 90's SG's usually have nicer looking rosewood fretboards too. Are they both in good condition? Same colour? Any photos?

They both look in good condition, I'd still go for the '98 though.. It looks to be all original, and comes with the classic Brown Gibson case with pink plush lining and shroud, and combination lock. The '98 has more of what I'd call a wine red finish, the '09 has a brighter red finish. Also the '09 has non original Witch hat knobs installed, and a blank truss rod cover, I think the original would have "SG" on it. Does the 2009 come with the original case? If it does, it probably has white lining, no shroud or combination lock.

Choose the one that plays and sounds the best to you.

From my experience, older not does not always equal better.

If you choose the 2009, it would be wise to keep the Nashville bridge and only swap it out for a new Nashville bridge if the previous owner decked the tailpiece causing said bridge to cave in. I would not advise replacing it with an ABR-1.

Play them both if you can, thats the only way. But if I had to choose without playing them I'd go for the '98.

    Before you buy either one,
Carefully loosen the strings, then remove the 11 pickguard screws and take a PEEK under the pickguard.
Those large "batwing" pickguards can hide a huge amount of "customization" damage.
At least get the approval of the seller to return it if you buy it, take it home then find hideous damage.
    Good luck, SGs are worth the T R O U B L E ! ( as the song goes ), right Elvis?

Go for the '98! SGs from the 90's are very good, i really like the early ones and the late ones around '97 - '01. They have good specs, usually good rosewood or even ebony, the finishes are thinner and usually give a more true colour (better cherry for example, and the white usually have yellowed beautifully!). Also, that 1998 has the ABR-1 bridge instead of the Nashville one. I like the ABR-1 better, my 2001 SG special has that one and that is THE most awesome guitar I have owned.
