What's so hard about offering the standard in some other finishes. Would it be so bad to get some Pellham Blue, TV Yellow or Inverness Green up in this mutha? Ebony, cherry. Been there done that.

I honestly dont think anything else sells that well on the standard. Epi also tends not to offr other colors.

Drooling over that satin ebony. Would be the perfect sister for my faded worn cherry.

They've never offered anything else (except limited runs), so how would they know? I would think new colors would sell way better if anything. I've been waiting my whole life for the return of Walnut on a batwing SG. Oh well, I'm waiting for the rare Walnut Samick SG to turn up (or a Classic in Ebony Stain).

Theoretically, they could use the sales numbers of differnt colour limited runs, models of sg, or models of guitar, and extrapolate onto the standard.
They could also do focus group testing, and similar things to try and gauge interest.

I dont think anyone knows how or why gibson actually makes some of these choices though. I would not be suprised to hear that it was a coin toss some of the time.

I played a 2016 SG Std at GC Sunday. I'm glad I don't have to switch to Fenders.

They do that every 10 or so years and that fulfills the demand for the next decade or so. Marginally popular colours, at best, I have come to actively hate Pelham blue, just because of the glut of Pelham blue offerings in the last few years.

I'm really on the fence on this. Having owned a music store for a brief time, I can assure you that the traditional colours sell faster, but more to the point, I think Gibson do a pretty good job of tickling the eclectic's fancy, too.
I like design. Minimalism is my personal favourite school, at the moment, but I also like pop art and art deco. Fender and Squier have offered every colour in the spectrum along with some killer art/design work. I kept and personalized my Medianoche Azul, because of her colour, but if you look at their flagship lines, they stick with tradition. Epiphone have offered up so much Pelham blue and Silver, in flake and bursts, and TV yellow, that they've over-saturated the market. I don't know how many more colours of Wildkat, Rivieras and Casinos they could've conjured? Gibson has offered up some fantastic colours in the Futura and custom lines, in the last couple of years, too. I would advise anyone who's looking for a specific colour to consider contacting Gibson about a custom finish.
Beyond that, there is the used/vintage market.
Here is my last thought and a bit of advice: When presented with the opportunity to own your dream, you have only yourself to blame if you let it slip through your fingers. I never lament the guitars I have purchased, but some of the ones I didn't................

The 2014 SG Standard was offered in 6 colors. There was also a special run last year through Guitar Center of the Standard '61 with Coil Split that came in Pelham Blue, Champagne, and Silverburst among others.

Just got to play on a 2016 gibson standard at Guitar Center and boy is it great to have it back!!! Got the traditional headstock inlays, the old school tuners, where the neck is glued into the body is flush. although no push pull volume pots for coil split. No g-force tuners or zero nut fret, back to the way it was. They also seemed to lowered the price of the 2015's down to the exact same price as the 2016's. Oh did I mention that the 2016's sound great!? played it through a vox and sounds fantastic....not that i'd be able to afford it but it seems to be true Gibson went back to the old school ways.

Havin had a look on their bass offerings: does a listing in the Gibson website mean that the instruments of the past few years are still available (i.e. not sold out)?

"The EB Bass is probably the best thing that Gibson introduced over the last few years."

So true, light, versatile, awesome. Decent price, but I think it would have done better with a gloss finish, even at a higher price. Finish quality was about the only thing people complained about.

It pickups seem to have made it into the 2015 T-Birds.

(Unfortunately, the recent EB-Bass has been longscale. If there had been a shortscale version, i probably would have been tempted.)

I like short scale mainly, but the EB13 is so light and ergonomic it's a good choice for a short scale player.

I havn't seen those anywhere as of yet, just the sg standard and the les pauls which look gorgeous. Hell there was a gold top with black open humbuckers that caught my eye in the front at guitar center as you enter as well as a sunburstish les paul with soapbar p90's next to it
