I have had a 61 reissue SG for a couple of months now. I love everything about the guitar except it will not stay in tune for more than about 2 or 3 songs a night. This is the only guitar I have ever had this problem with. Should I change the tuners to Grovers or something like that? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome to ETSG Trippsg. :D :D :D

There have been some good threads on this subject and some real good input on it. I hear there is a mellowing in time and it could just be going thru that. I'm sure others will direct you to the posts, or give some more input on it. Hang in there.....>! 8) 8) 8)

Be sure your string winding technique is proper and have your guitar tech have a look at the nut . the problem with tuning is seldom the tuners and more often in these areas

Sixstring and others are right on two counts:

    1. First and foremost (especially if you come from the Fender world) go to frets.com and look at how to wind strings properly. This is critical and pay attention to detail and kink&coil direction and string length with respect to first 3 and second 3 strings. If you follow that exactly, you will be well on your way-don't cheat-it's harder than you think-and prolly more important than you think.

    2. There is very, most definitely and assuredly a mellowing time frame. For my new SG STD (bought in February) it was approximately 1 full month of hard playing. Now, it seems its in tune everytime I take it out of the case to play it-even after fairly rough handling.

I have had a very occasional problem with the tuning on the G on my 65. The only two causes I have been able to come up with is the how well I wrapped it and the weather. Most of the time (98%), it stays in tune both during shows and even between. I check the tuning before each.... whether it needs it or not. 8) 8) 8) It does a remarkable job of staying in tune.

All kidding aside, I have noticed that no matter how many SG's i have owned the G string does go out form time to time.

    Thanks for all the help

Thank you for all of your help. I've started putting on my strings a different way. After 17 years of playing guitar, I guess I've been putting strings on the wrong way! I'll let everyone know if that works.

I dunno, doesn't matter which guitar it is for me.... that $#%# G always seems to wander a little if I do the usual heavy bending.

  18. my g on my g400 always seems to fall alittle idk why it just always has seemed to and another think i think the g tuner gets banged around the worst because its the first tuner on the bottom side...so if brush up against somthing (grr) it knocks it all outa tune
