I recently picked up this from Kevin at Center Stage Guitars. It is supposed to arrive Monday. He is very nice and answered all my questions. The story is when he got it it was Pelham blue so he refinished and reliced it. He told me the stop tail was original and he thinks the knobs are original but he used spare parts in his shop to put the rest together. He says the parts he used date from the 60s, the 1 exception being that the pups are modern. Here are the pics. I know these pics don't show the pots. He was unsure of if the knobs were original.

    So my questions are:

    1. Does anyone know Kevin's reputation. He seems kind of a big player in this area.
    2. With exception of the pups, does everything look correct for a 63? If not, what do I have?
    3. If I want to look for era correct pickups how do I know they are correct? What is the going price? Do these ones seem appropriate?

I used to have a 1963 SG Special.

The neck heel joint in your photo looks suspect to me. It appears the neck heel joint may have been cracked or broken off and repaired which would explain why it was refinished and had a relic job done. Looks like it was packed with bondo or something. Never seen a neck heel joint like that before on a 1961-65 SG Special with small guard.

The rest of the guitar in your photos looks to be period correct with the exception of the missing poker chip from the selector switch.

Pictured below is the heel joint of a 1963 SG Special...

    sorry, corrected the title

Could it be a 63 smooth heel?

    Yes.
After doing some quick research, there were two heel variations from 61-63. A stepped heel and smooth heel. This is the first time I have ever seen one with the smooth heel before.

My '62 has the smooth heel (and repaired break). My 2000 Custom Shop, which was supposedly spec'd after a 61 also has the smooth heel.

    Here's the '62

The Custom Shop one looks to be a more modern take on the smooth heel.

Hey, that was only 3 SG questions, not 63 SG questions. False advertising!

Yeah, there was not much of a hard rule back then, it seems. I've seen steps and smooth heels within the same year quite often through the early-mid '60s.
