    Wow, Seattle musicians earn $1.33 per gig. So if a guitarist or bass player breaks a string...they couldn't even afford to buy a new one!

    It is now all clear to me. It explains why all those Seattle grunge bands tuned down a step -- they wanted less tension on those strings because they sure couldn't afford to break one.
