Well finally got a chance to look at the knobs. The new silver insert top hats sit low, about 1mm or less to the top. I went and took a look at my 2018 Ebony that still has the black top hats and swear they are a good 5mm away from the top of the guitar. I do recall the black top hat knobs themselves being shorter than the ones with the silver inserts

Why did you choose a 2018? The 2019 Standard '61 is very attractive imho. Cream binding, 1961 body design, nice vintage color mahogany, Gibson ABR-1 bridge, nickel hardware ....

Thanks, mine is from 1979, I am the original owner, having bought the guitar for $ 398.00, while i was still in high school (that would be about $1,300 today) this was from the old Kalamazoo factory. I am glad to see so many SG enthusiasts still out there!

I agree the 2019 is a very attractive guitar. I chose the 2018 simply because it was the best I was offered for my LP. I couldn't be happier with the choice, I lucked out with a guitar that I really connect with :)

Thanks for checking. I'll have to take another look at mine to see if they can go down a bit further.

I think there are pros and cons to both. The 2018 won't be as expensive as the 2019 '61, and the 2018 has locking tuners. They're extremely similar guitars overall though.
