I love my Super Distortion in the bridge on my SG, except I miss the dynamics of a good AlNiCo magnet pickup. A friend sent me a couple of A4's and an A5.

I tried the A5 first and it sounded ok, but was a little too scooped sounding. Next, I put the A4 magnet in and was blown away. It sounded very similar to the ceramic magnet in tone, but responded more like a good PAF style pickup.

I wouldn't have expected PAF tones from a hot wound pickup like the SD, but I love it. I'm tempted to pick up another Super Distortion and try the same thing in my Les Paul.

    Cool idea...

Can you explain what you mean by responding more like a paf?

Super d's in an sg.....that's aggressive. I like it!

Much better dynamics. I can clean it up by picking lightly or dig in and it hits hard. It also lowered the output some, in a good way.

I think it looks sexy too. :naughty:

That's definitely the setup I'll have in my Faded down the road. SD in the bridge, not sure what for neck yet.

Cool! That's kind of the downside of the super hot pickups. If a magnet swap fixes that...but keeps the muscle? That's a no brainer....

    Pretty damn smart.

Dimarzio PAF Pro. Perfect compliment to the SD.

What's the source for an A4 magnet?

What type of magnet comes in a stock SD?

Ceramic magnet, a double high one if I remember correctly.

Ebay. Measure to see what length you have (they come in slightly different lengths.)

Also, you might want to try an Alnico 8.

It's the same as the story behind the Duncan Custom Custom, although that pickup is a bit hotter than the DiMarzio. Supposedly Eddie Van Halen swapped the ceramic magnet with an A2, and that's the pickup used on Unchained. I view EVH stories in the same light as Bigfoot sightings and alien abductions though.

I have a PAF Pro in the neck position in my Special Faded and its great. It's matched with a Mo Joe in the bridge, so nowhere near as 'hot' as an SD, but the pairing is pretty much spot on for what I usually play in my covers band (Elvis to REM, Black Keys, Angels and Divinyls (hard rock from OZ) to Bryan Adams and much more besides. Very versatile set of pickups.

I'm checking to see if I can get an a2 and an a4 from the same eBay seller.

    Here's my Super Distortion...

Cool! Just be careful - I think I just bricked a pickup on my R8. I think I grounded one of the end connections against the cover.

I have a couple epiphone humbuckers and a J90C in a box to experiment on.

I have two Dimarzios in the bridge position that have ceramics.

The Super Distortion is just under 14k so I'm thinking it may like the 8 or the 4.

The Trembucker is just under 10.5k so maybe the 2 or 4 will work.

The spare may go in the J90c as that one is about 8.5k.

Then I need to find a guitar to put the J90c in.....
