    Hi forum,

I'm sorry if this is a recurring thread but I'm looking for some help. I bought this guitar about 6 months ago and to cut a long story short its now been brought to my attention that it's fake. Can you help me with this.

Here are the concerns in question that I have been told ( bear in mind the person has never seen the guitar in person, only pictures):

    Headstock
    Gibson logo is a sticker
2015 models should have Les Paul 100 vertically below the logo
Truss rod cover should say Special on it
    Should have g-force tuners

    Body
    Wrong colour for the year
    Pickups have been changed
    Pickup surrounds should be beige

I'm not 100% convinced by this guitar but I also don't fully think it's a fake either. I can find a 2015 model in this colour or style so I'm baffled. Please help!

Yeah, welcome Mike, but until you show it to us, not much can be argued.

Could be the headstock got broken, repaired and repainted and new logo.
Could be the body was repainted.
Could be the pups were changed.
Could be the TRC was changed.
Could be the G_Force was removed.

Could be all sort of things.

Imgur or Photobucket for your photos. Resize if they are too big.

I'm with Mike on this one. Trying to load pics to my imgur from my phone just to upload to ESG is a huge task.

If you have the photos on your phone and it says they are too large when you try to add to the thread then email the photo to yourself and choose a smaller size photo to send in the email.
Then you can save the smaller photo and insert it using the upload a file option. It is a bit of a mission but it works (if you have an iPhone, not sure about Android)

Of all the forums that uses this look/software/format (tdpri, AGF, etc. all changed to this new look recently) ESG is the only site that you have reduce your image size.

Why not expand the image size allowed? I don't seem to be the only one that has the issue.

I want to participate as much as possible, but it's just a massive undertaking to do the simplistic thing, IMO.

Seriously it's not that hard. I have not had any problems. I email myself reduced size pictures from my phone and use the upload a file function. Worth figuring out, the brain trust here is both generous with its knowledge and kind with newbies. A very hard combination to find on the interwebs these days.

Thanks for the advice!! Easy when you know how. It was the file size being too large, but a flag would have helped. Anyway, there now. Let me know what you think guys.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Telltale signs of a fake are truss rod buried in the neck, yours seems legit based on truss rod. Second tell tale is the bridge screws like on an epiphone, again yours seems legit on that aspect. Pots and PBC look legit. It more likely looks like a modded guitar or someone spent alot of energy and money on Gibson hardware to make a very good fake. But I'm not an expert. But to my eyes from these pics, it doesn't look like a Chibson.

Are the control knobs push/pull? If not, I'm 99% certain you have a fake on your hands. That or you've got a guitar from a guy that tried to turn his special into a standard. The hologram is supposed to prove authenticity, is that also a sticker? cause then that's just making it even fishier. The zero fret seems to be right from the pics provided...could you post some close ups of the nut?

No "Les Paul 100" on headstock for 2015 seems odd.

    Check the pickup cavity.
    Make sure not painted black.

Would have been easier to get a 2013 SGJ.
Then add small guard and chrome covers.

Would it have had a Gforce on there as standard? My 2015 Special has one along with holographic sticker and Les's sig logo...

(Still have my L plates on when it comes to Gibsons )

Some people do swap them for regular tuners I've noticed, would there be a way to check maybe?

Does seem odd that it doesn't have the Les Paul signature though... But I gather they weren't popular at the time of release?

Sorry I can't be more help, but will be interesting to see what our resident experts weigh in with :thumb:

    Standards have trapezoid inlays.
    Specials have dot inlays.

To me, it seems like a heavily modded special. 24 frets? Check. Les paul hologram on the back of the headstock? Check. Brass Nut? Check. To me it seems like someone didn't like the look at it and did their best to get it to look how they wanted. It doesn'took like a fake to me, just extremely heavily modded.

    These are all interesting comments.

Send the pictures to Gibson, along with the serial number and ask them.

Why does the guitar have to be a '15? How much did you pay for it? How much would it cost to make a fake? Most Fakes are high end guitars, SG Customs, Les Paul Customs, 345's. Chances are, the only thing fake about it is the date. It looks good to me.
