After waiting for months for Sweetwater to get these in stock, and spending the last two weeks with an order in being told "We haven't heard from Boss, but you're first on the list!" Uh huh sure.

I even explained that I could go buy it locally, I was just trying to be loyal to Sweetwater..... "Well, that's your choice"

    Wrong answer, Bub.

Today, since SWMBO was otherwise occupied, I decided to take a trip to my local Sam Ash.

After browsing for a bit, I asked about the Katana 50 (they had one on the floor) and explained my situation and asked if they could do anything for me.

Answer: Hell Yeah! They dropped the price of the amp to fit their 2 year warranty in there for me so I could have it at the same price as Sweetwater. Yeah, I had to pay tax, and buy my own Tootsie Rolls, but I got MINE! It wasn't even the floor model.

Now if they could just stock my damn strings........:sadwave::rolleyes:

Out of respect for SWMBO, since she just pulled a 12 hour shift and will do so again tomorrow, playtime will be postponed until tomorrow after she goes in. After waiting this long, this is a small price to pay for domestic tranquillity.

I've said this a few times here, but it bears repeating:
She's the one unquestionably good decision I've made in my adult life, I'm not about to screw it up.

Me too, sold my Blackstar id core recently, so on the look out for a new amp - if I can find a Katana 50 in stock in the UK... :hmm:

Rayin, I have the 50 also...it actually turns out to be one of the best sounding and feeling amps I have every played at very low volume. I mess with mine in the corner of the living room while my wife watches TV or reads and she doesn't hear it much louder than just playing a guitar without plugging it in. The bonus is that it both gets really loud and still sounds good loud! I think you will love the amp.

My schedule has been insane lately, so today is the first chance I've had to really dig into it. So once I send SWMBO off to work and clear my backlogged internet stuff (which I'll have done before she gets up.)
I'll fire it up and try all the stock stuff at all three power levels.
After that I may tinker with the software. I only had time to download it the other night.

I apologize, but work, sleep & domestic considerations had to come first.

I'm sure I will too. I did my homework on this one. I could've gone Line6 but who better to model pedals than a company that makes some of the best pedals?

Oh Momma! This thing blows my lil' Teal Stripe Peavey Envoy 110 a-way!

The 0.5w setting send the cats running for the hills! 25w feels like my old Peavey, but better, and 50w....

The Clean is very nice, unsurprisingly it reminded me of @Dave Johnson 's Roland Cube. Crunch felt like my lead channel settings on the Peavey. The opening riff of "Satisfaction" was the first impression for me. Lead was a bit brighter than Crunch and I'm at a loss to explain Brown....... Once you understand Brown you may never come back.......

The effects were interesting to say the least. I'm not an expert on pedals, but I felt they offered some rather useful tones. I especially liked the Flanger & Phaser effects. This being a Boss product, I'm sure the models are quite good.

What the amp lacks is a "talent" setting.

I'm just gonna leave that comment floating.......like.....well......yup, now you've got it.

Do I think the Katana 50 was a good investment? Yes, yes I do. As is, this strikes me as a good bedroom / garage / small stage amp. (Power settings) It can be plugged into a PA via the line out / headphone jack so I'd imagine it'd be gigable in larger settings if you chose.

I haven't tinkered with the software yet, but I've seen the song patches and there is a good variety of "sound like" stuff in there.

I plan on letting some friends take a whack at it and seeing what they think as well.

Sounds like you are digging it. I was pleasantly surprised with mine; the quality of the tones are just light-years better than I expected, and no digital artifacts is a huge surprise at this price point.

I stuck a WGS ET-65 in mine and it really made it come to life. Nothing really wrong with the stock speaker but let's face it, for $200 they are cutting some corners and putting in a top-quality speaker makes the amp a serious contender for a giggable amp. I have only used it for a casual jam so far but it is definitely loud enough if the drummer isn't a maniac, and it actually sounds better as it gets louder (to a point - if you dime it all of the historic SS harshness will hit you full-bore).

This thing made a bit of a believer out of me. Up until now every modeling amp I had played through seemed like a toy.

    I am digging it!
I'm not there yet on the speaker swap, but I'll keep it in mind.

cool little amp... I wonder what would happen if someone tried adding a closed back to see what changes that makes to the stock speaker? I know on other smaller amps... adding a closed back makes it a totally different animal with a lot more punch. I fall in the camp of not liking previous digital ss amps but am open minded so will have to give the katana a try once I find one at a local GC store.

That's a very nice and affordable speaker. A friend of mine with his 20 year old Hot Rod Deluxe, just replaced his stock Fender speaker with a WGS ET65. Huge difference for the better. Especially at robust volumes. Much more meat and wood to the clean tone. The overdrive channel is a lot warmer, too. Half the price of its British counterpart.
