I've been a long time Strat and Les Paul player. Recently I got an 05 special faded brown on a trade, and I can't stop playing it! I love the thin finish and how it has naturally worn over the years. The neck feels amazing! I got it with full intentions to swap it over to P90s, as I've always heard people say that the 490s aren't that great, and I've been jonesing for p90s. But this thing sounds awesome to me! Sounds as good as my 11 LP traditional that had classic 57s. Only thing I have done is change to orange drop caps. This one is a keeper for sure!

IMAG0538.jpg here it is as I got it. Already changed to reflector knobs, and the original black pick guard is going back on with some raw nickel pickup covers

IMAG0558.jpg This is with the reflectors on and I tried pickup rings. Waiting for the black pickguard and nickel covers to arrive in the mail.

    Awesome choice on guitar.

I favor the thin finish on those Specials as well and the stock 490’s sound great to my ears. If you're still wanting the full on P-90 experience to add to the herd later on, maybe look into a used SG Classic.

+1 on the pickup rings, reflectors, etc.
You're doing all the same mods I do to mine.
The only difference is that I install the ring on the bridge position only.
The slant or wedge shape of the ring keeps the pickup level with the strings.
Placing foam shim under the neck position takes care of that one.
Once you get the black guard in place, the rings will be less visible.
The pickup covers will be the icing on the cake.

Thanks! I actually got the idea of the pickup rings from this site. I've been searching through the old posts for ideas. And I can't say enough about the thin finish on these. It seems like a nicely worn old piece of mahogany, like from a vintage gun stock.

    Welcome to ETSG...

Late last year, I became the owner of an '02 Special Faded (Cherry). I like the 490's a lot. Very distinct sound.
