A short clip of my 2019 Gibson SG Special Limited Edition P-90 "live". This is one of the early model year 2019's, they made last fall, when it was a limited edition model. It is a little bit different from current production, one difference is it has smaller frets. The rest of the gear used is a 1966 Fender Champ, 1965 Fender Vibro-Champ, and a Ibanez TS-9 is added for good measure. This was recorded in Indio, California 4-26-19. Hotter than hell there that day.

Good job and looking good !

    Ahhh ... a P90. Funny, I can't hear the dreaded hum.

Funny you mention the hum. Live, the white noise covers up the hum. When I recorded with it, I had to use the middle pickup position almost exclusively!

Is the middle position a hum canceling one?

Yes... A humbucking-pickup has two coils. Two single coils run together kind of does the same thing as one humbucking pickup. Like a Strat's selector on position 2 or 4, the 'out of phase' position. The difference between this and a Strat is the middle position is not out of phase.

I did the gear geek-out thing over this guitar. I love it. The fit, finish, set-up, everything is flawless. I have three 'Gibson Historic Custom' guitars, and this SG looks and plays as good as any of those.

I do think that when they went into regular production they made them even better.

I think the late model year 2019's like yours, once they made it a production model, have hand wired pots. Mine has the funky Gibson circuit board inside it. My belief is that the "L.E." model is kind of an interim thing- They were using up the old circuit boards etc... But hell, no big thing. I forgot that thing was even in there. I had to get a screw driver and take a peek.

    Signal to Noise Ratio.
When using a single P-90 with hi gain...

My favorite pickup combo is the stock P-90 at the neck for cleans and a Kinman or Fralin Hum Cancelling P-90 at the bridge for hi gain use.

Mine didn’t have a noise canceling middle position. It was a later version, non-pcb board. I would have preferred a noise canceling middle, perhaps would have kept the guitar.

All you need to do is flip the magnets on the neck pickup so that it is reverse polarity with the bridge pickup. Swapping the pickup leads on one of the pickups only makes it out of phase with the other.

I might try it with one of the LP Melody makers (2 x P90).

Is the middle position hum canceling on yours?

I hadn't really noticed , But I would say no.. I have had P90 guitars that were
But I noticed that right away, This one has no hum canceling in the middle position..
Maybe that was a PCB board thing...
