I was just offered a “Made in Japan” Gibson SG as a trade for a Marshall DSL15C. I didn’t think Gibson ever made the SG in Japan, at least under the Gibson brand.

    Attaching a picture. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Gibsons are quite famous for being made in the U S of A. Lots of Gibson "looking" SGs have been made in Japan/Korea/China...

That's a strange looking Gibson logo for an SG std; selector switch seems rather high, and truss rod cover... might just be the photo.

Go onto the Gibson site and send them an email asking; they'll probably also want pictures of the back of the headstock showing serial number, and back of guitar; an honest seller/trader would be happy to provide you with them.

Fishy for sure. Check it out in person and question the seller. But a face value something isn’t right. Just the comment, “made in Japan” and “Gibson” is not right

That's not a legit Gibson SG Standard

    1. Headstock logo silkscreen instead of inlay
    2. Missing crown inlay on headstock
    3. No bevels or contours on body
    4. Single ply batwing
    5. Incorrect number of screws on batwing
    6. Incorrect selector switch location
    7. Bridge
    8. Nut

This may be the worst fake I have ever seen. I'd report the guy for fraud.

    Here’s the response I got:

It was part of a past trade deal I did last year. The guy said it was a Tokai special ordered 60/64 Hybrid built to his specs? Serial #001? It has a roller bridge fat vintage neck profile. 59 style PAF's. Guitar is in mint condition. If I were to keep it I would upgrade the pickups but other than that it is a nice guitar.

    Along with the attached photos.

    My inclination is to pass.

Thanks for any feedback and advice.

Ridiculous that it has a Gibson logo and Made in USA stamp when it clearly is not.

That one's from alibaba custom shop. Seriously, the appearance of the serial number (typeface, color, ) is exactly the same as alibaba Chibsons we encounter online, but everything else looks worse.

That needs to be reported to Tokai and Gibson, neither company would make such crap

Well if he's been genuinely tricked by the guy who sold it to him, you need to at least let him know it's a fake so nobody else buys it unknowingly. And if he ignores you and relists it still claiming to be a Gibson, then I would report it. Where is it listed?
