It happens to you that you like an amp so much, you want ... a second one ?

That's what I did with my SCXD. Just bought a second one to leave at the cottage. I think I'll build a new combo cab to relocate it with a 12".

The one at the studio goes through either a 2X10 cab (for single coils) or a 2X12 (for humbuckers), depending on the mood of the day. That XD is a cute monster with these cabs.

The Super Champ is a brilliant amplifier.

If I ever get tired enough of lugging my Marshall DSL40C around (~55 lb), the SCX2 and a Ragin' Cajun swap will make my short list.

It's coming along pretty well. I had a leftover pine shelf to work with and plywood scrap pieces.

I made it 2" deeper that the original cab, I want it to sound fuller and it looks good. It will probably get a 2/3 closed back.

Oil finish, white stain or let it age as is ? Probably white, maybe painted not stained. It's for the cottage and this is what it looks like there. It would be fun for the amp to blend in.

I used a piece of an old painting on MDF for the back. Signature still at the bottom :naughty:

I vote oil finish! Classy. I guess it's more of a "Hyper Champ" now with the bigger cab and speaker. :thumb:

That's a heck of a "cottage rig," I gotta say.

I like that Hyper Champ :h5:. I'm more and more leaning towards the oil finish.

I did a booboo on top though. I drilled one inch to the right to fix the chassis. So I've got 4 extra holes on top ... DOH. I'll make them disapear some way.

I stuck metal tape to reflect the chassis's heat, like in the original cab.

Saturated with tung oil, and it smells good.

    Chassis back in.

While waiting for the new speaker to arrive, I'll look for cloth to cover the baffle.

Anybody has a cheap source for a couple feet of speaker grill cloth ?

Yep. When the family was at its peak we needed space and I sold off my Traynor YRM-1 Reverb Master. I recently picked up another from the same month (September of '73).

    Nice cab build!

Thanks Bob. It was a fun build.

I meant a second one on top of the first. But I get your point too. Those Traynor are real nice, but mostly too loud for my needs.

I had one of those for a while when they came out, with two 1X15 JB Landsing. Yeah ... I'm that old.

Now ... if I couldn't plug the stock Super Champ in an external cab, I would sell it right away. Too thin for my taste, with not much headroom with volume.

This cab I built with the 12" is much better, but just not enough and I still don't want to clutter up with an external cab at the summer cottage. If I only played single coils à la Strat and Tele, it would be fine. But I don't. Remember, I'm an ex bassist, I need some ooomph.

So ... I'm getting a used Mustang II V2 and see if I like that better. For around $100, how can I go wrong ?

Personally, I'd try to see if I could score a Mustang III intead of the II... Had the II, and was a decent amp, but the interface is downright infuriating to use - you'll need to hook up a computer to do simple things like adjust the mids or most of the effects parameters. More importantly, the labels on the patch indicator LEDs don't actually match the actual model used except for the single, non-user-adjustable set (there are three sets - green, amber, and red). The III has a much nicer Celestion speaker, an LCD that allows for adjustment of *all* parameters of amps and effects, and, blessedly, a mids knob.

The III v.2 is, IMO, one of the best modeling amps ever made. I actually think that it's performance was a little *too* good, which is probably why the GT series is noticeably worse.

And remember, if you truly hate this ugly piece of junk, you can always feel free to send it to me for, ahem, proper disposal.

I usually find one or two clean and OD selections and stick to them. Then maybe reverb, delay and sometimes a tad of chorus. That's about it.
And I don't need 100W, but thanks, I'll look into it.

I posted on different boards for a trade: my SCXD for either a Mustang III V2 or a Katana 50.

Well shoot. If I didn't already have my eyes set on something else this year, I'd have bought you a brand new Katana 50 and had it shipped to your house for that amp.

Oh, that's not the SCXD that will get traded.
