Wonder if Ken Fisher designed them for them? They do look interesting......starving the tube of voltage and lower heater voltage is the old trick the Germans did to the Neuman Tube mikes for 40??? years or more? The beatles used them as well as countless others. Never repeated again till now........

And it runs on 6 volts.... 4 AA batteries. I smell something amiss here....

    CB,

6 volts if the batteries are in series. Due to the current load, wouldn't it have been better to do a series/parallel to 3 volts and run that through a step up transformer to make the batteries last longer?

What's the minimum voltage to get the electrons to flow in the fire bottles?

They are doing the same thing at Takamine with the acoustic guitar pre-amps. I'm thinking about getting one for my Take but I think the price may be too high. Haven't found one yet without the guitar to go with it and the guitars are all pretty high end Take's.

or is this all BS and they are installing a orange LED under the tube to make it look like it is glowing......

    Step up transformer.....

Well lets see, you cannot transform DC, so you'd need an mv circuit to do that, get some AC goin on, then step it up, and rectify it back to DC to run the tube. And the heaters... they need 6v on a 12Au7 if you run 'em split phase, or 12v if run end to end....

Doing the DC to AC to AC to DC thing works well in things like flash units, where you're two AA's can charge a capacitor up at some high voltage (about 330v in most small flashes) then release it thru the tube to "make the flash".

We'd wanna run say.... to do it right... 150v or so at 2 milliamps, per triode. That'd be 150VDC @ 4ma .... quick math... 6VDC @ 100ma in a perfect zero loss circuit, more like 150-200ma in a real circuit, plus the heater which needs 6v at 300ma, so we're talking a half amp needed at 6 volts.

AA batteries are about 2850mah so at 500ma we'd expect about five hours use at that current level. Not what Vox says.. they say 20... so I'm still in hmmmm mode.

    CB,

You say the needed voltage is 150v @ 4 ma. Is that normal or the cold voltage they are using?
Backwards math tells me that they may be running lower voltage than 150v to get the 20 hour battery life.

    Is 150v minimum on a 12AX triode?

Funny,,,,install a LED inside a tube to create the illusion of a tube glowing! Where's Benny Hill?

The "tube" uses less current than its heaters... you cannot get around the heater current, thats gotta be there. I mean you COULD run em say at 4volts maybe.... but you'd still have the amperage thing to contend with.

Thats for sure.....add heater draw and you'll take out a power tranny for sure, and fast!

Well Voxy, what do you think it would take to get VOX to ship
out a few dozen to us for field trials and feedback (no pun intended)?

I think that is a great idea!

    New Vox Pedals

I'm going tomorrow down to Korg/Marshall {Thursday} To check out those three new pedals, the booster, overdrive and distortion! Mitch said they've figured out a way to run a 12AT7 on batteries, lasting about 20 hours, or wall wart. He also said that they really aren't starving the tube! That's a first and he said it's been patented. The same old Japanese Engineer who designed the UniVibe that Jimi Hendrix used also worked for korg all those years and came up with this design to run the tube pedals! Probably check out the new Marshall 18 watt too, that Marshall can't build fast enough to come close to meeting demand!
    Any requests?

Get us some free samples there Voxy!

And if you see that lavender hand-wired amp
that was at the Philly show, snag that for me, will ya?

He said hand wired was out of production but their making a tricked out version based on feedback thats not :? handwired..... They pretty much nailed the transformers in those versions too.....I'm gonna try to get a set  wish me luck on that one!
