Maybe should have posted in the vintage section. Anyhow had a chance to pick up a "players grade" '67 special and couldn't pass it up. Always wanted an O.G. Special with P90s. My God they don't disappoint. It got Grover's at some point and a new bridge but all else looks original. Pots date to '66 and I don't think the original solder had ever been disturbed. Super clean in there. Pickups and frets are original. Umm... What else. Fantastic checking all over this thing. I wish I could get a better picture of it. It's really beautiful. Swapped cases with my '74. Seems to fit better. I'll get better pics when I get home from work.

I can't explain how happy I am to have this. I remember in '95 I saw Clutch for the first time live and picked up their self titled album which has in my opinion one of the best guitar tones ever comitted to tape. Tim Sult playing SG Special with P90s. His was earlier. But still. That tone has been my goal ever since. I had a few minutes before work to run it into my setup with a bit of tube screamer and reverb and it sounds right. Exactly what I thought it would sound like in my head. And it stays in tune. I thought I might have to bypass the trem and wrap around the bridge strictly for tuning purposes but so far it holds tune really well.

Oh, this nailing a tone inside the head or looking for a vibe issue!! This is also the pain I suffered and almost went insane so many years. I understand you perfectly. But this goal of you is amazing! Not just tone, you nailed a perfect vintage guitar too :dude:

Those late 60’s SG Specials with P-90’s are my favorite. My first SG was a 1969 SG Special.

One cannot go wrong with P-90’s.

Had a chance to get a few more pics. Tried to find a way to show the checking but it's hard to get with the lighting in my room. [IMG]

This is interesting to see the difference in the bevel on the horns going from '67 to '74.
