I've been jonesing for an SG after selling my "61RI earlier this year. Checked out this G-400 Pro at Sam Ash, and with a 17% off deal, I couldn't resist!

Question: are the Alnico Pro pickups potted?

All Epiphone pickups are potted. Un-potted pups are quite rare, actually, even from third party makers. You would have to look for something like SD Seth Lovers if you want unpotted pickups.

Thanks for the info! I was wondering about the pickups because they seem to be more prone to feedback than some of my other guitars.

I have to say, the workmanship of this guitar rivals much more expensive ones I have. The only quibble I have is that the finish is pretty thick. I don't think it affects tone very much though.

I bought one of the '66 Pros and a friend of mine told me it plays like a thousand-dollar guitar.

Hmm, I wonder, are uncovered Humbuckers usually potted?

Welcome to ETSG. Many of us here think the G400 is an underrated guitar. Great platform to mod if that's want you want to do or just rock out with it.

The bridge pickup is pretty microphonic, the neck pickup not at all. I'm going to wax pot the bridge pu and hopefully that will help, because the pickups sound great.

Not much point trying to wax pot the pickup when it was done at the factory. If anything, you will make things worse, possibly even damaging the pickup.

As to the question regarding uncovered pups... yes, they are wax potted as well. Unpotted pickups are always indicated as such in the specs of a pup or the guitar if they are stock. I have never heard of unpotted pups coming stock in any Epi model or being listed in the specs.

Yea, I played on those SG pros. Epiphone really hit the nail on the head with them! The only thing that stopped me from getting it is the Epiphone SG Les Paul custom which they had for the same price. I believe that aside from the vibrola, and a few astetics here and there, pretty much the same as far as electronics and pickups go. I really like the coil split on em, a lot of other people say that it doesn't make too much of a difference, but to my ear i can hear the difference just fine where I have other tonal options to work with.

Do I use the coil split a lot? well nope, but its there if I want it :)

I've potted pickups before with no problem, I don't think I'll damage it. The pickup may have been potted at the factory but they didn't do a great job; it screams like a banshee at volume. The neck pickup is perfect.

Well if you've done it before, go right ahead! You most definitely know more about it than I do as I've never tried to do it myself. I know what screaming banshees some pickups can be... I had a set of SD Seth Lovers which are unpotted in the Gold Top I recently sold and they could be a handful sometimes. Wouldn't have changed them for anything though! :)
