Hi guys, it's been quite a long time away from the forum. I am here to introduce to you, solid guitar porno maniacs, my new SG.

She's a 2000 SG Special in cream finish, gold hardware and ebony fretboard. I am not a super fan of gold hardware but when I saw this beauty for sell for a reasonable price just 100km from where I live, I pulled the trigger.

I already own a nice cherry '92 Std that I love, but I was looking for another SG, possibly a Special with ebony baord, possibly white/ebony finish and here we are.

The axe is in very good conditions, with original parts and HSC, and it also has a nice story to be told and remembered (you know guitars have souls..).

So, I drove to Turin from Milan in a very misty and rainy day; as the seller told me before, the guitar owner was a friend of him, who passed away some months before, and he was handling the sale of all the beautiful axes his friend had collected in his life, helping the wife of his friend.

I met the seller in his apartment; a 65 years old man, living alone in a very small and modest apartment, smelling of cigarettes and old stuff collected in the years, time seemed to had stopped inside there.

From the beginning he was very nice with me, offering me a coffee and telling me the story of Ilario, the owner. They used to play together since the 60's, Ilario the guitar player and he the bass player, when music was great all over the world and also Italy had some good prog-rock bands.

His eyes became a bit red and shiny while telling me their story, I listened in silence with a bit of admiration towards those real musicians, picturing the good old times of those fellows, I was participating with those feelings...

I tried the guitar on a very very old Peavey amp, everything was working fine so I came home with the guitar, determined to give her a second life in the name of Ilario.

Now let's talk about the guitar: first of all she is very light, considerably lighter than my other '92 Std (she suffer a bit of neck dive, unlike the Std). They also differ a bit in terms of dimensions, something I noticed putting both in the same case, the Special is a bit wider! She comes with the 490 - 498 combo, the frets are almost 100%. The neck is chunky, rounder than my '92 Std, and I really like it.

And the tone...yeah, that's the best part of the story: I don't know the reason, I believe it's because of the ebony board, but this guitar has a straight rock tone, very well defined and no muddy at all. The '92 Std is more resonant, is like a old lady who deserves care, kindness and a softer touch, this Special is a rock machine instead (her character reminds me a LPJ I sold in the past), in reharsal she comes out of the mix very well, and she wants to be used and abused, played with energetic strums! VIVA SG!!! :dude:

    Here are some pics, enjoy!

    ciao,

    Nico

    Congrats! Very cool.
I had the same year and model not too long ago and changed all hardware to chrome and added chrome pickup covers.

I sold it to thin the herd because I already had a few SG Special Faded with ebony boards. I kept the one with thickest neck and had it refinished to aged TV White with the grain visible but filled.

Yes, I remember your Specials, very nice guitars :thumb:

next one for me gonna be a P90 SG, and I got a question: al the Moment on my Standard There’s an old Di Marzio SD at the bridge and a Gibson P94 at the neck.
I must admit I still have to understand the character of this P94 at the neck, for me it sounds too dark and bassy, that is exactly what you would not expect from a P90.
I want to try it at the bridge, but its a neck model; does the difference in pole pieces distance affect the tone that much or if it works fine I could leave it there?

    thanks

    Nico

    DiMarzio = Humbucker
    P-94 = Single Coil

    My favorite pickup combo.
    Humbucker at bridge position .
    Single Coil at neck position.

If neck pickup too dark or boomy, try lowering the pickup height first. If not enough, try 550K volume pot for neck pickup and disconnect the tone control.
