Thanks very much again Col & others for your thoughts on cleaning/over cleaning and cleaning products. One small point I don't think got a mention is personal acidity. I've noticed a particular friend whose strings and bright-work (almost) corrode before your eyes when he touches a guitar :(

not everyone suffers from this problem. but it's not too unusual.

the average person could have very acidic sweat or skin grease and never know it.
but the guitarist or bassist finds out very soon after getting his first instrument.
Metal strings and guitar parts are susceptible to corrosion from acidic sweat.

Me, if I found I had this problem I'd consider switching to keys or drums.
I know one bass player who wore surgical gloves to prevent excessive damage
    and replacement of expensive strings.

    That's is excessive!!!
Surely a strict clean down process after each gig or rehearsal would be enough. Also diet and lifestyle evaluation should improve things.

yah, I thought so too... he'd rip the gloves to shreds and
have to do the strict clean down process anyway. And I would
also use coated strings. Those have worked great for me.
But I knew this guy before I ever heard of Elixir Strings.

Doesn't Angus Young have really corrosive sweat too?

Just because Angus and I come from Australia, it's a bit over the top to think I could answer that question.:cheers:
