Thinking about dropping a P-90 in the neck and keeping the Mini Humbucker in the bridge. Anyone have any experience with P-90 and Mini Humbucker combo?

I would think a P90 in the bridge would be the better way to go.

    Sounds interesting...

No but I like the idea. Keeping the min-hb for stratty type leads and using the neck P-90 for deep rich distortion sounds right, to me.

I just got that Vintage Modified Squier Tele with a Mini humbucker in the neck and it's pretty sweet. I like a bridge P90, I like the way it barks and bite, I like how it respond to pick attack.

That's the same SG before and after isn't it. If it's two different SG, make one the reverse of the other.

I prefer humbuckers or mini humbuckers in the bridge.

Yes, same SG before and after.

The great thing about minis and P-90’s is that they are interchangeable in the same cavity.

Imagine an SG Classic with minis hung on the batwing instead of P-90's. The lack of pup mounting rings would make them look small.

The thing I would most take into account is the sheer volume difference that would occur between the pickups. I've tossed around doing this very thing, but after putting P90s in my Epi SG, I can say with absolute certainty that the extra-hot mini-hums in the Gibson put out a significant amount of volume over the P90s. I think you would have to consider replacing the bridge with a more vintage-wound mini-humbucker to even the volume out. I know Dimarzio makes one that gets nothing but positive reviews for a really decent price (less than 80 bucks street). Otherwise, you'd need a neck P90 that has a ton of output, unless you're willing to deal with the volume difference.

I recently had a second 2016 SG Special T, same as the ebony one pictured above but with cherry finish that I found used with a set Lollar P-90's installed. The Neck was 8.2K and the Bridge was 9.1K. The P-90's sounded louder than any of my SG Special Faded with 490's (7.8K) or the ebony 2016 SG Special T with mini humbuckers.

Pictured below are the minis currently installed in the ebony 2016 SG Special T which are not hot at all.

    Neck (6.2K)
    Bridge (7.2K).

There is a thing called pickup height adjustment screws. The output of the middle single coil on my VM Tele is pretty well balanced with the mini hum like this.

Try it out. It's worked for Neil Young for a while! 9811b0ccf70de54f26c42afbc2aca7a5--young-old-neil-young.jpg

I just ordered a Lollar P-90 for the neck. Already have SG Special Faded with dual humbuckers, so having another SG with a P-90 and Mini Humbucker will add some variety to the mix. Will update when received and installed.

The P-90 in my N-225 has no difficulty being mixed with the Dirty Fingers.

Lollar P-90 arrived today and was installed in the neck. It balances out really nice with the stock mini humbucker in the bridge. I wanted this combo for cleans in the neck and hi gain in the bridge without 60 Hz.

The stock mounting plate works out great for either mini humbuckers or P-90’s. The same height adjustment machine screws used for humbuckers work for the P-90 with the plate. No need to worry about stripping out a hole in the bottom of the cavity with wood screws.

Interesting choice. Like mentioned by others I would of done the opposite and put a hot P90 in the bridge position. I may get a Lollar to put in my LP JR down the road for some variety.

Good move. I myself don't mind dealing with the hum, makes me more efficient on finding that ideal tone and it gives it that little je ne sais quoi.
It's nothing to worry about, once they're screwed down, the screws don't eat up the wood like termites.
You still have to use springs or foam to keep the pup at its desired height though, don't you ?

Tell me, is the mini ring fixed to the pup ? It goes up and down with the pup when adjusting height ?

Yes on the P-90, but not on the mini humbucker.

Yes. There is a spacer that fixes the pickup to the ring and the entire assembly moves up and down as one piece. The nut is only tightened enough so that the pup does not drop out of the ring. The adjustment screws are still able to spin freely on the ring.

The outer dimensions of these recent mini rings are the same size as a P-90.

I knew that, but had never seen how it was staying together.

So, on my VM Tele, a P90 wouldn't fit without routing out the pickguard. But I don't want to go there anyways. Got enough P90 as it is.
