Honestly, I think you should just go down to bare wood, seal it, paint it black, apply a repop logo, and bury it under a bunch of clear. Without sounding too harsh, this guitar is not one of the most collectible out there, so I say use it as a test bed and have some fun with it. This is how you learn. You can do this.

Ya true. It's a project. I'm going to let it fly and see what happens. I'll probably know pretty quick if it's going bad. I may even just try to do it tonight. If it goes bad I'll just abort and take it down to the wood.

I really look at these old guitars as art. Once I took this down to the wood it really is nice. So I'm trying to respect it. That's probably corny sounding.

Now this ia a maple guitar. I wouldn't need to seal it would I? or do you mean prime it? I'm not up on the technical terms for preparing the surface.

Most would say no sealer is needed on maple, but I seal every type of wood. Should be easy to find in an aerosol can for not much money.

I used a sanding sealer on the maple neck of my latest build, the "AstroCaster":

The decision has been made. I’ll get to spraying the black over the holiday. Pretty sure I’m going with a tv yellow. On the guitar itself. Still working on that one.

    TV Yellow - Do it.

I always wanted a proper TV Yellow SG with the grain filled but visible through the color so that it was smooth. But the one I have in mind does not exist, so I ended up with a Les Paul Junior DC instead and could not be any happier.

Did you want a TV Y. with a batwing guard? Cause there were CS SG Specials in proper TV Yellow. You probably know about those if you like the colour, but for everyone else, these are proper gorgeous.

Yes, I was aware of those, but they all have Slim Taper necks. I don’t get along with those.

Hey 515, I haven't heard from you in a while. How's the SG coming along?

Hey beerbelly. Well not much progress because summer got super busy with work/life stuff and I tend to over think things on projects like this. I was going to do yellow but I think I’m going with a cherry finish. Add a full black pick guard and install single coil strat sized humbuckers. I need to get the right sanding paper for the body and work out some of the imperfections as much as possible. So I wish I had more to share but right now it’s still a naked raw word SG.

After years of not having one, I'm shopping for another SG Standard. There just isn't a sexier, better looking, better playing guitar, and I currently don't have any humbucker guitars. Still have the '64 Junior I refinished and will never sell. But I'm pretty sure my bank account is about to take a hit...
