One of the best guitars ever made. That's why it's my avatar.

    Thanks all.

Of all the different SG that I have gone through in the past, these two are my favorite.

Never played on P90s live. Do they get the same amount of hum as single coils? How about feedback?

Beautiful guitars! I recently picked up a 2000's SG Classic P90 which is what drew me to this board... fantastic guitar, old soul. I feel like it will crush live. I also don't have issues with hum, but I use a Fractal AX8 which has a fantastic noise gate.

    P-90 = fat single coil
    Feedback = yes
Hum = yes at high gain

The ebony SG Classic has a Kinman zero-hum Nasty 90 Heavy installed at the bridge position that is freakishly quiet like a humbucker when played at high gain settings. The neck P-90 is stock as well as both P-90's on the cherry SG Classic. The noise gate on my Kemper Profiler works really well eliminating hum on the stock P-90's.

Lovely, both of them - these classics are super cool, imho.

I hope to get an SG classic one day to go with my SG jnr and soon to be SG special...

Had my hot-rodded Classic out to a party last week and nobody noticed the hum much, but I got to thinking, could I rig a "dummy coil" and eliminate the hum?

Most "noiseless" P-90's are basically stacked P-90's similar to stacked F-style single coils on Strats. The Kinman zero-hum P-90 use a second magnet underneath but also have other circuitry inside which makes them unique from all the other "noiseless" P-90's on the market.

Since they are taller than regular P-90's, I only installed one in the bridge position which barely fits. The neck position cavity was too shallow and I did not want to remove any wood, so I left the stock one in place.

This configuration works for me since I only use the bridge position for high gain and the neck for cleans.

What size is the lower coil ? I wonder how big it has to be to work properly. Because one could wind a lighter coil that fits the space underneath the Bridge pup.

    left: Kinman P-90
    right: Stock P-90

I transferred the baseplate from the stock P-90 pictured below over to the Kinman.

Wow, very similar interests in gear! I use the Fractal AX8 but have also owned and used the Kemper KPA many times. I absolutely LOVE having excellent noisegate built into every patch for every guitar type. When people complain about noise from P90's (or any single coil) it just doesn't register and is never an option.
Of course, I'm old school and spent years dropping my volume knob to zero in between songs at gigs as well.
I've heard great things about the Kinman pickups and his P90.

But lately I have really tried to enjoy and gig my guitars as stock as possible without looking to mod immediately (although I am always tempted!).

On another topic I can honestly say after owning hundreds of guitars (and amps, and modelers) over the years the Gibson SG CLassic P90 is one of the best stock guitars I have ever played.
