    Hello forum! First-time poster here.

Anyone here own one of the HP-II 2018 model SGs? I've got a brand new one in blood orange fade waiting for me in the post office but I'm on holiday and have to wait a week to get it!

I used to own a 2001 Standard in heritage cherry but ended up selling it - a decision I regret to this day. Prior to that I played a red Epiphone SG special (my first electric guitar). My SG's have always been red, so when I saw the HP-II in that red finish with a flamed maple top I knew I'd have to get one. 24 frets, real MOP inlays, 57 classic and super 57 classic pups with coil splits/taps, locking tuners, a nice case... I thought they had all sold out but one eventually popped up on Thomann for only 1,4k €, so I instantly ordered it. (And they ran out again!)

Anyway, I'd love to hear your experiences with the guitar. Can't wait to unbox mine.

Here are a couple of pics of it I found online :)

Sweet !! I almost got the Pink Fade when they had the 1379.00 close out deal but by the time I was ready it jumped back up to 1579.00 so I ended up getting a 2017 SG Special HP for 735.00 including shipping from eBay and waiting for arrival

Big time congrats a gorgeous axe!

I have the 2018 SG HP in cobalt blue fade.

I think only difference is yours has locking tuners pre installed and fretboard material. But i swapped my robo tuners out immediately for grover lockers.

    Congratulations Mindthepipes !

You will love it - I GUARANTEE !

    Hopefully you'll get it undamaged.

My advise to others would be to ship the guitar by itself and send the accessories in a separate box.

When I received mine in its huge metal case, the heavy Gibson muli-tool was in headstock part of the case.

Since the guitar was a store display unit, its unknown where the couple of scratches/dings in that area came from, so . . .

I immediately took it to my local store and negotiated a slightly lower price due to the cosmetic damage.

I kept it because its such an awesome guitar. The folks that made it should be really proud !

The 2018 SG HP is an instant collectors item because of its unique floating pickup mounting design, (no pickup rings/adjustable from the rear).

And among other things, 2018 HP colors are out of the ordinary to say the least, "Hot Pink" in my case.

    Changes I've made:

Replaced E-tuners with standard Gibson tuners, (precise drilling was required for the 12 tiny mounting screws).

And obtained a standard hardshell case to replace the cumbersome metal case - (now used for a retired/archived memory lane unit).

Good Luck Mindthepipes, keep us posted !

Thanks for the replies and the nice welcome guys!
I am stoked and can't wait to get mine - pics will follow :)

I could be wrong but I believe the HP-II comes in the lighter teardrop fiberglass/composite case and that the original HP 2018 had the heavier and more expensive aluminium one.

I do hope mine will come undamaged! But if the guitar itself is great, what can a couple of scraches do, as long as the headstock is still in place. Fingers crossed.

Here's a couple more pics from the internet. The amount and tightness of the flame on these seems to vary quite a lot. I love how you can see the line on the sides where the maple and the mahogy meet.

I have not seen yet any of the 2018 hp sg models pics where the flamed top was not gorgeous.

The three colors mojave fade cobalt fade and the red fade are outstanding.

The red one just screams out for look at me look at me!

I have a 2016 SG "HP" in ebony that came in "Spocks' Coffin". This guitar resonates with every note but particularly on the D#on the G string. It could sustain all day if prompted. Here's some photos- SG HP 1.jpg SG HP II.jpg SG HP III.jpg

Yikes i must have missed the 2016 HP ebony model dang thats sweet looking.

Interesting that was maybe an early batch of what turned into the 17 and 18 hp models ... a 22 fret version.

The 2018 early hp models have the spocks coffin slightly modded with wheels on bottom.

Our new friend is waiting to see what case he receives.

I have now accumulated 3 spock coffins hidden in a closet two from lp models.

There's only one thing wrong with it - it's not the 2018 HP-II in Blood Orange Fade! ;)

No seriously guys, great SG's! :)

The case is different too: yours (and mine :)) has an aluminum one, the HP II - at least the later one, has a plastic/fiberglass one.

The 2018 Gibson SG HP Moderne is killer without HBs rings

The adjustable nut is a very good concept to obtain a low action !

    welcome to ETSG!

great pictures all... Let's hear it for the SG Hollow Points!
those colors and maple tops sure
do pop! SG has evolved quite a way from the old LP
    double cut slab.

What's the consensus on the big case?
I don't own one, and they look like they would protect the guitar completely, which is the point after all.

But is it too big? takes up too much space in the
band van? Nowhere to store it... two year old BB can
tip it over on himself while dad is sleeping...

Or is the big case just too cool. Will these be ultra
desirable in the future (if any). I want mine like this:

    Thanks for the welcome Col!

I wouldn't mind if my case was like that :D Love Star Wars.

I'll post pics of mine next weekend once I've returned home and picked it up. Fingers crossed it'll be a good one, after all this hype :)

So the consensus on the 2016-2018 range big aluminum cases?

They are absolutely genius and will protect the hell out of an SG while taking some minor damage themselves ( scratches etc ). They will certainly put some damage onto things they are whacked into.

The 2018 models have the even better version with wheels so better for airport travel etc theoretically.

I think everyone wants to have one of these cases "just in case" and well obviously if you have a model that came with it you should keep it for resale value.

For day in day out typical usage they are just way too heavy and impractical and I will pick a Gator Case custom fit to the shape of my SG every single time. Even for air travel in typical scenarios the Gator Case ( or equivalent is better ).

Yes, I love mine. The 2016 and 2017 aluminum cases have a wooden handle, while the 2018 has a very classy leather-like one.

Got the guitar  It came in the lighter fiberglass case. The neck relief and string intonation were off, but after a quick setup it now plays and sounds great!
