The SG I recently purchased came with a SKB hardshell case, which is great except that the handle is broken and comes off. Is it possible to purchase the handle only, rather than another case? Thanks!

I hope that it is possible, because I've come to feel that SKB cases
are the best, and I now own four of them.

I've had no problems with the ones I bought, although I've also read reviews that
reported the weak handle. To me, the SKB-61 which fits the SG seems tough and
roadworthy, nearly impervious to any abrasion or impact, and it also does not
harm other more fragile cases when stacked together in the back of a van.

So I'll be watching your thread with interest, not that I know anything but
because I'm interested in what all of our members might say. Anyone else
have an SKB case with broken handle?

No pictures at the moment. It appears that the handle pops into the plastic round knobs screwed to the side of the case. Those round knobs are fine. On one side of the handle the grip broke in half leaving the other half present. The other side it looks like it was melted partially and cracked off. Photos later. I'm near a Guitar Center and will ask them. But I won't fall for the "you need a new case" line.

I posted pictures of the new SG on the other thread. With regards to the handle on the SKB case, SKB sells handle replacements on their website ($5-$10 each). I have reached out to their customer service department to see if they sell the handle for the SG case I have. The case is pristine otherwise. Will let everyone knows how it turns out.

I do not know which model case I have. Can't find a model number or anything on the handle or case and I don't know what year it was made. It is in pristine shape, so perhaps it is fairly new.

If the case fits your SG, it's likely the SKB-61. Those are what I have.

I don't think any other case will fit an SG, unless it's a generic one that fits
several guitars. The SKB-61 is designed to fit the ESP Viper as well as the
Epiphone G-400. So it's got some extra spaces, but is still a very snug
fit for the Gibson SG. An excellent design IMHO.

I think I could check mine at the Airport, and let it go down the
conveyer belt into the room below where all the Gorillas are.
I believe it would survive. It's not as rugged as a $500 Hiscox case
or a Calton case, but seems very tough and well built.

But I hate to fly with my prized SG, so if I ever did, I'd likely put it
into a Gibson Gig Bag and carry it on. That would fit in the overhead
I believe. Skip the Gorilla room.

Thanks, Col Mustard. It is definitely a case for the SG. Fits great. I will keep the 61 in mind when SKB gets back to me. Here are two pictures of the broken handle:

Ummm how about a picture or two of the whole case that could help us confirm exactly what kind of case it is?

Here is a picture of part of the case. It looks like the SKB-61 case. SKB makes a handle replacement, but they are out until later this month or November. However, how is the handle to be installed since the interior is padded/built? I'm assuming SKB doesn't expect us to tear out part of the area around the handle? You can see the ball joint mounts in the photo:

Maybe carefully pry the padding away from the area that needs to be worked on with non-flexible putty knife and attach handle. When done use contact cement to reattach padding.

That's a design defect. They should have: 1), used the appropriate strength polymer for the applied stresses, or 2) reinforced the area with an embedded metal wire or strap like all other manufacturers do.

I just replaced two case handles with Ebay replacements. The metal brackets fatigued (old old cases), but the plastic-over-metal handles survived.

There is a iSeries skb case for an SG. If it like the one for my L.P. it is airport ready.

I replaced the handle for my Gibson Les Paul case, the standard brown case. Leather handle had worn through. Bought a new one on eBay, realised I am no leather worker, and had my local shoemaker fix it. Really worth it compared to the cost of a new case, the SKB cases are really good!

I solved this issue by purchasing a new SKB-61 case for a very very good price. The current case is now for sale on Reverb for $30 (plus shipping).

Did you check with SKB? I emailed them about something and they were very responsive.
