    Anybody have the spec for this, is it actually a 61 reissue or is that phony and its just a stock Standard? How to tell? It looks like a black Standard with small pickguard and the usual tulip kluson tuners.

    Where's the Holly located on the headstock?

    Is most of it above the middle tuning posts or below?

    Above = RI
    Below = Standard

    '61 on the left, Standard on the right:

    Holly is below so it must be a standard. Anything else to look for?

    What year are your SGs? I'm most curious about the neck profile, I'm not a fan of slim necks.

    Every SG Standard with a small guard that I have encountered has a Slim Taper neck. Look for one with a Batwing if you want thick rounded neck, specifically a 2016 model.

    Just realized you will need left-handed model, not sure if 2016 available as left-handed.

    The pair in the pic are 2005s and was using it for an example.

    The '61 reissues necks use Slim Taper profiles. Most SGs with the Batwing have a rounded neck profile.

    You say your 2012 has the small pickguard. I'm guessing here, but if it has the small neck tenon then it's probably a slim taper. If it has the long neck tenon then it's probably on the rounded side.

    My 2005 batwing Standard has a thicker wider neck and the inlay below the pegs. My older '61 Reissue has a horrible flat-backed heavy-shouldered neck profile with a much larger headstock.

    Then maybe theres no point in getting this 2012 if its no different than a 2017-2018 for the same price.

    You know, I'm not so sure what you have. You didn't say anything about the neck tenon.

    Most 2012 SG Standards have the Batwing and the rounded neck profile. Because of yours having a small pickguard, and if it has the low back tenon, you very well may have a 2013 Standard (it's very possible as I have a 2013 SG with a 2012 serial number).

    If so, a 2013 SG Standard is a different creature. It is more desirable than the 2017 and 2018 Standards and is worth more all things being equal, in my IMHO of course :D

    This is where pics come in handy, front and rear. ;)

    Contours on a '61RI should be slightly different too.

    I owned a 2012 '61RI, but never really paid attention to any of that.

    A 2012 Standard has the large batwing pickguard. It sounds like you are talking about a 2013 Standard:

    This is the guitar you're on about right? https://reverb.com/item/24045482-gibson-sg-61-reissue-2012
    On Reverb listed as a left handed 2012 61 Reissue? Its actually a 2013 Standard (Ok probably made in 2012, but I bet it has "Made in Usa 2013 model" stamped on the back of the headstock) 2013 SG Standards are very similar in spec to the '61 reissues, main differences being the slimmer headstock on the 2013's, and the '13s have chrome hardware instead of the nickel that the '61 reissues have. I've got a 2013, its one of my favorite SG's.

    The quickest method that I use to identify a small guard SG Standard with trapezoid inlays as either a ‘61 Reissue or regular SG Standard is by the placement of the crown inlay on the headstock as arcticsg stated earlier in this thread. I don’t pay attention to bevels, neck tenons, etc.

    [IMG]

    An SG ‘61 Reissue is an SG Standard, it’s just a special kind of SG Standard that pays tribute to a 1961 SG Standard without a Sideways Vibrola.

    That photo is taken at an angle, yet it does not fool me. If you imagine a line drawn across the bottom of the crown inlay, you will find that it lines up fairly close to the bottom of the tuning post washers.

    Yep, that looks like a '61 Reissue to me.

    Can you tell me about the neck, slim tapered or rounded? Why more desirable? The seller just told me its a 2013 Standard and not a 2012 61 reissue.

    What are you looking for in an SG other than a thick rounded neck?

    And why more desirable than later years?

    You win that's the one! The seller contacted me to tell me its a 2013 Standard and not a 2012 61 RI afterall (assuming someone from here told him?) but thanks for clearing up that mystery!
