After some help with identifying this. Picked this SG 400-R up a while back. At first I didn't notice but the clipped headstock is more short and stumpy than the usual. I own another 400-R from 1989 with the open book headstock but never seen one like this before. It is identical to my 89 epi in build apart from the headstock shape. Unfortunately the sticker serial number is long gone. The guitar in question is on the left next to a Chinese SG Pro for comparison. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Thanks for that. I kinda guessed it was around that period. The headstock shape still puzzles me though. The wiki link you sent states open book headstock?
