Just thought I would share the set list from a gig I have coming up. Talk about a weird mix of music! This is what happens when several musicians get together to make suggestions of what songs we play for a classic rock set I guess HEHE! The ones I marked are all songs I have to sing lead on. More than I was originally expecting considering we have 3 vocalists but I enjoy singing and have already told them I plan on having my phone or a tablet with the lyrics mounted on my mic stand.

I will also be doing rhythm guitar. I figure I will use an acoustic for a few of them like dead or alive and last dance but my trusty SG faded special for the rest. Only one that really scares me is freebird. I am no lead player so told them up front I cant do the dual solo on that one. Lead guy says he will cover it and I can just play the bar chords... I will be curious to see if we can pull that one off. Ive played thru the rest and nothing really stands out as too tough. I have to learn that riff for barracuda though... the lead player has it down nice but I need some practice to smooth out the riffs on that one.

    Here is the set list:
The Troggs - Wild Thing *
    REM - The one I love *
Tom Petty - Mary Jane's last dance
The Who - My generation *
Hollies - Long Cool Woman *
    Heart - Baracuda
Lynard Skynrd - Sweet Home Alabama *
    Aerosmith - Dream On *
Bon Jovi - Dead or Alive
    Bad Company - Bad Company
Robert Palmer - Doctor Doctor *
    Aerosmith - Come Together *
Alice in Chains - Rooster *
    Lynard Skynrd - Freebird

Definitely a set that has something to please everyone.

An interesting choice from Tom Petty's catalogue.

I was surprised to see Rooster in there, a killer song though.

    Good luck with the gig!

yep... weird stuff but we have 6 musicians doing this gig and asked everyone what songs they wanted to play with the only guidance is classic rock so that is the result. The petty tune is my buddy who is playing acoustic guitar and singing's favorite song. He will be singing lead on it which is good since those lyrics are tough on that song. REM song is a favorite of drummer. Baracuda is for the female vocalist who will take lead on that. I actually chose rooster for the list. I love the song and play/sing it around the house all the time. My buddy is also taking lead on freebird and it is the song that will be toughest for band. Pretty much everyone is going to be pushed on it. No way i can do any solo on it so I'll just play power cords and lead guitarist says he will handle the long solo. It has been fun getting ready for this. I have about half the songs down now so still lots of work to do but we still have over a month.

I think it's a solid set....in fact, I like it. Most of those songs I don't listen to in my personal time.... but if I'm enjoying a beer, listening to live music, I would really enjoy it.

My brothers band does that Petty song, and it's solid. Everyone always seems to enjoy it. And you end with freebird, so if you still have an hour and a half to kill you can keep it going.

Looks good to me. Good luck!

HeHe, freebird is one of those songs that seems like it can go on forever. I just hope the lead guitarist is up for a 3 minute non-stop solo :dude:

We have talked about having a couple of extra songs but decided to just keep it to the 14 since we have limited time to practice. I figure we can do it in 2x45min sets and that includes me talking to audience for a minutes between songs while musicians tweak amp settings, etc from song to song.

So, how did the gig go? You may have posted a post mortem and I just missed it.

My gig was cancelled which was major bummer for me. Guy that set it up had health related issue during last practice. I had fun at rehersals and had my stuff down. Only song i was still bit shakey on was baracuda by heart but had at down passable... just not totally comfortable with timing on it. Now ive got the itch to start gigging again.

    Sorry to hear that.
Do the rest of the folks you were playing with have the itch also? If so then go for it!

Honestly, that list doesn't seem odd or eclectic to me. Seems a lot like the playlist of every "classic rock" station in the last 20-30 years. No deep tracks or risky choices, just the well-known stuff. No surprises.
