    **** that!

All but two of my Gibson’s were bought online.

The two I bought in person were checked out in a parking lot, and I looked at them, strummed them a couple times and handed over my money.

They are Gibson’s. They are perfect from initial conception. Except for ones with uncovered pickups...

when you already know what you want, it's possible to
buy a guitar online, unseen, unplayed, and not be taking
    unnecessary risks.

I've done it too. My particular attitude about guitars enables me to
buy one, and then make it into what I want, if it falls short somehow.
I actually enjoy doing this, so you see no crybaby posts from me.

But do I advise the unwary or the unwashed to do such things? NO!
Do I advise someone who comes online to find out
if such and such a year class of Gibson guitars has a neck
thin enough that he can play it,
or has a neck thick enough that he can play it...

Do I advise such a person to buy such and such a guitar?
NO! I advise him to go and play a bunch of them, and buy the one
    that feels the best
, no matter what color it is, or whether it has binding
or not, nibs or not, one piece body or not, rosewood or ebony board,
...none of these things are important compared to the tone and the
    feel IMHO.

Play it before you buy it...
(unless you are prepared and able to make it what you want
    successfully and without fuss).

I have purchased several online and always received what was advertised.

One time I drove 80 miles to meet a seller at a parking lot. It only took me a few seconds to decide that I wanted the SG. I put the SG back in its case and handed the seller the cash and drove another 80 miles back home with the SG.

The problem isn’t the online deal itself. We’re talking about faded gibsons.

They’re actually not just “faded”, “played in like”. The wood is unfilled and feels naked. If you’ve never held one, you might get a wrong picture judging by ads.

I lament that I ever sold my SG Faded. It had an ebony board with half-moon inlays, a big neck, and a tonal bite you could hear a mile away. That was a great guitar, very suitable to the bars I was playing in at the time. Very funky.

But I can't remember what year it was. Sorry. Maybe 2004?

Yes, they're great guitars, try one to see if you like the feel of the open pore finish.

The good thing is that they're cheap and really easy to refinish if you like gloss. This two guitars had a faded finish, but with some grainfiller, color and clearcoat (TruOil in the V, lacquer cans in the Melody Maker) they're like glass now. Certainly more blingy ;) I did them at home with no experience whatsoever and they turned out pretty good!

I love my 2002! I put 57 classics in with 50s wiring orange drop caps and dependent volumes. Havent been able to play it lately because I've been waiting for a tool to help me keep a bone nut true I'm putting in. The finish is soft as hell but feels great!

I' not 100% sure, I think that 2002 and 2003 models came with ebony fretboard, first with Crescent moon inlays and with dot inlays.

SG Special Faded came with rounded C profile neck but I don' t have the years in mind, my 2004 has a slim taper.

In the past, I had the following SG Special Faded...

2003 Worn Brown - Ebony Board Moons

2003 Worn Brown - Ebony Board Dots

2004 Worn Yellow - Ebony Board Dots

2005 Worn Ebony - Rosewood Board Dots

All of them had chunky rounded necks.
I sold all of them except for the 2004 Worn Yellow which has been refinished to Aged TV White Gloss.

Later on, Gibson shortened the model name from SG Special Faded to SG Faded.

I have a faded and a Jeff Tweedy sg. I prefer the faded in every way except for looks. I really like the sound of the pickups, and love the neck shape and faded feel.

I didn't even really want it, I had a Dean flying v that wasnt selling and got offered a trade. I was planning on selling the sg, but once I set it up to my liking I've loved it. It did take a little work though, adjusted the action, pickup height, and filed a few frets. I really wasn't even an sg fan before I got this one, never cared for the looks. I would say definitely try one out if you can.

It was my favorite guitar, but I recently got a Strandberg which has dethroned it for now. One day I'll get around to making a new pickguard and adding some type of covers. Added the b7 not too long a go.[IMG]

The Faded is an excellent guitar even though its a stripped down standard they can sound real good, I have a 2004 Faded with the Ebony board that just felt good to play i bought this used recently. I just had some work done on the neck and frets and just love playing it this guitar rocks... Check one out if you can!

That's a drop dead gorgeous SG version. I would be all over one of those. What year(s) were they made?
