I bought an SG because of the band New Model Army...but in the back of my mind there was always Robby Krieger. I knew when I got my SG I would be playing every Doors song under the sun. Krieger is a super talent. He's the second reason why I own an SG.

I have been playing for almost 30 years and was never into SGs, primarily because of aesthetics. I liked the body shape of Les Pauls more, and for a few reasons I was attracted to Specials and Melody Makers and other "low end / budget" models. I love the music made by most everyone mentioned on this thread, but I was never attracted to any particular model because of a guitar hero, but always pictured myself playing some of the classics on a particular guitar that attracted me aesthetically, often that guitar being something other than what the famous player used.

And then one day I was driving through a town I don't usually go to, had some time to spare, and stopped at their Guitar Center. On the wall of used guitars I noticed this gorgeous looking SG. Beautiful crisp lines of the body, clean neck binding and inlays, rich glossy red with grain showing through. I took it down and plugged it on an amp, and woah!!!! Amazing tones, great string-to-string balance, light weight, super comfy neck. I wasn't on the market for one but still bought it right on the spot for around $900 out the door. It turns out I got a 2014 Standard '61 with Classic 57s, no robot tuners and no 12th fret inlay that most 2014 Gibsons had. Still one of my favorites and stays always out by the amp.

Now in the spirit of posting pics of famous SG player (some of them being associated primarily with different guitars), here's Jack White playing an SG in his early days of White Stripes.

Didn't Justin's black SG get stolen a few years back right after the studio fire?

Uhh, Gibson does have signature models. I was obviously talking about The Beatles. Gibson has never gone down that road even though the number one guitar that The Beatles used throughout their career was a Gibson.

Rickenbacker, Hofner, Gretsch, Epiphone have all made Beatle-centric guitars and sold them as such, but Gibson hasn't even though The Beatles have played the following Gibson gear:
    - J-160E acoustic
    - J-200 acoustic
    - SG
    - Les Paul
    - 335

Gibson made the John Lennon Les Paul Jr. and the John Lennon J-160e. There is also an Epiphone reissue of the J-160e called the John Lennon EJ-160e. Link for the Epiphone here.

For what it's worth apparantly the SG that Harrison played was also played by John Lennon so since I reckon Lennon is more famous that Harrison, he wins. Prove me wrong!

Here's some info on the exact SG they both played, which was auctioned by Christies:

Ok, I might get kicked off the site for posting this entry on "most famous SG players", which he is not, but last night while browsing on Youtube last night, I saw this, a video of the Osmonds (yes the Osmonds!) with one of the brothers (Alan) playing a White SG. In this particular picture, which is from a video, its unclear if he is really playing the instrument, but I found another video link, which I have listed below, showing him actually playing the SG. Alan Osmond is clearly not the most famous SG player ever but I would be willing to bet this is the first post on this site that ever mentioned any of the Osmonds!

this is the link to the other video, for all you Osmond fans!

Watch Rod "The Bottle" Price also know as "The Magician of Slide" and "Slide King of Rock and Roll" kill this SG!

Good stuff on the SG starts at around 5:25 and goes to about 7:10.

Thanks for mentioning Barry, his contributions to the Boston sound are often overlooked
