Hi! I’ve got a Palmer attenuator I’m thinking of upgrading for 2 reasons mainly, I want to be able to switch between 8 & 16ohms, and also because I’m finding it doesn’t seem to have as much volume reduction as I thought. My main amp is a Marshall JMP100 which I know is a very loud amp, but even with the attenuator on it’s lowest setting I can’t get the master volume past about 3 for home use. My question is, would an upgrade to a better attenuator make much difference volume wise? Or have I just got an untameably loud amp? The amp gets a good run out at gigs either way
I think you have a wonderful, untameable beast. Had a hot plate for my jcm800 and the tone gets compromised when cutting more than -8db in my experience. Went with jvm205h with better master and no need for attenuator. Have not looked back.
Best option out there. Have the London power VVR style system installed in your amp. Tons of people do this mod. It has different names but the London power guy is the developer. It’s the best Power tube saturation at lower volumes I’ve heard. Your other best sounding options are something like the fryette power station or the badcat unleash. But they add a bunch of stuff between your amp and your speaker.
I'll vouch for my Rivera Rock Crusher attenuator: Nice gadgetry that works extremely well. $500 new, though. The Fryette Power Station is the ultimate for a couple hundred more, IMO. Not only does it excel at power attenuation, it's also capable of taking a 5 watt Champ and turning it into a 50 watt ear-splitting monster...
Koch Loadbox II. Its a killer. Changed my life, no less.:) It also have some great 'speakersimulator' outputs + DI It even sounds killer at 0.5 watt (1 % of my 1987x 50 Watts)
I use Weber Mass units. https://www.tedweber.com/mass https://www.tedweber.com/media/instructions/mass-instructions-2016.pdf https://www.tedweber.com/mass-iii
