I kind of agree with Tony on that one. That messed-up finish is so metal, it hurts. Plus a refinish always risks changing the tone, I'd think. Why mess with perfection?

Pro, I'm sure that's Tony's reasoning. I still have to think that JD would like to see Tony out there with a nice showpiece for JayDee.

Anyone have a picture of Tony with the Old Boy before the finish incident in the car trunk?

Speaking with both John Diggins and Tony's Tech Mike Clement, both have told me that when Tony gets a new the guitar, the first thing he dose to it is put sandpaper to the back of the neck. ;D

John just built a "Old Boy II " a few months ago for Tony as a backup and the day Tony got his hands on it out came the sandpaper.

Mike told me Tony refuses to let ANYONE refinish Old Boy and I don't blame him !

Although small, here is a couple of pictures of the New "Old Boy"

I'll be phoning Mike for the Holidays and I'm gonna ask him to take some detailed close up pictures of Old Boy for me
as I need reference photo's for my project.

I'll post the pics when I get them !

I think the guitar was left in the car on a hot day, and the finish bubbled.

I doubt there are any "before" pics... It must have been broiled within days of it being finished... I dont see how he can play it every night in different parts of the world. sweating all over the exposed wood.. Couldn't that hurt the wood of the guitar?

considering it's 30 years old and still sounds awesome, I doubt it.

I think it was sweaty hands that led to Clapton's Fool SG having to be refinished. If you look closely at the later Clapton period you can see that the finish is missing from the back of the neck, probably because EC didn't like the feel of the painted surface. It may only be a matter of time before Iommi's "Old Boy" begins to assume the texture of dried sponge! ;D

I think it was wise of Tony to have a backup built. Could be that he'll love it as much as #1...

Ry-guy, I find it amazing that I seldom see Tony w/a drop of sweat when playing. He wears 3/4 length leather jackets on stage, and looks dry as a bone. Kind of reflects his personality...cool and collected.

I had some spare time so I worked a little on this Project this past weekend.

Filled original control cavity and reshaped it to resemble the original Old Boy cavity. Repositioned the pots and switch layout as well by using photo's and enlarging them untl I had it to proper scale.

I built this jig for the fingerboard to help steady the Dremel Router Base
while I route the FB for inlays.

I had a piece of oak lying around that I used for the base. Ran a piece of 1/4" Oak through the planer until I got it's thickness to match the thickest
part of the FB and I screwed on side of it down to the Oak board.

The opposite side I slotted so any sized/ tapered fingerboard can be used on this jig.

Now the Dremel Base has a nice flat surface to glide on and I don't have to worry about trying to keep it flat on the radiused FB.

I think I'll have to knock up a jig like that for my Cipollina SG project. There's more pearl than ebony on the fingerboard! ;D

Inlay are cut. They still need to be cleaned up a bit along the edges.
