First post here. After 20+ years of playing mostly bass but also guitar, I am really wanting an SG now! As I’m researching the differences between the Standard and the 61 RI, I notice that some years have 57 classics as a factory pickup. I recently owned a Les Paul Traditional with the 57’s, and I liked them a lot. So, I want an SG with those pickups.

Is there a list of which years the 61 RI had the 57’s? Which years the Standards?

There are some really knowledgeable people here, who will likely provide you a complete list. However, in the mean time, I can say that my 2001 61 RI did come with 57 classics stock

My 2013 Standard does. Roughly based on the 61.

    1992-2012 SG '61 Reissue

    2013 SG Standard
    2014 SG Standard
    2015 SG Standard
    2017 SG Standard

    2013 SG Original
    2014 SG Original

These are the main regular run releases with the '57 pickups that I can think of. There are lots of other SGs that have them, like Customs, Limited Editions, Artist models, Special Retailer runs, etc.

And I bought the 09 61ri! Now have to wait for delivery :/

I’m having a hard time determining from the photos if it has nickel or chrome hardware. I know what ages nickel looks like (and I love it), but hard to tell if the one headed my way has really nice nickel or regular chrome.

Also... any great live SG performances from the 60’s that I can pull up from Spotify? I was listening to some early 68 Garcia, which I believe was his SG period? Kath? Santana?

That should have the Nickel hardware. The nickel on my '05 61 RI has oxidized over time and has worn down/off from cleaning. The bridge and tail stop are looking grey and the zomak matrial shows in spots. The tuners are all grey and dingy. In general pretty crappy. I know, some folks love this look. I think it sucks on an otherwise perfect condition SG.

Btw, my ebony '05 Standard has the chome hardware and still looks brand new (hardware, not guitar), lol

Awesome thanks! I’m one who likes the aged nickel look, so I’m happy it’s nickel.

It’s an 07 not an 09. Not sure why I thought it was an 09. Anyway

The 2009 SG ‘61 Reissue and 2001 SG Standard Korina that I had in the past were equipped with 57 Classics.

    I play P-90’s these days.

P90s are next on the list as I’ve never owned a guitar with them! I have a Nash with Lollar Regals that I assume might be somewhat in that same ballpark as P90’s?

There’s an LP goldtop near me on CL with P90’s that getting really hard to ignore.
