for me the worst and most life-less distortion pedal i've ever played--- it would have to be the MXR Distortion II.

i've got a few that absolutely sucked.
first up the boss metalcore. what a waste of time and space. absolute garbage
next up is the rocktron zombie, another piece of garbage that i almost bought, thank goodness i try things out extensively before purchasing anything.
probably last would be the ibanez ds-7, the most boring sounding distortion ever

i've got a few boutique pedals that i love distortion wise but this isn't what is your favorite pedal now is it?

I think Laney1566 just tried the wrong pedal. What he should have tried was this:

So far my absolute worst has been a Keeley modified Metal Zone. No matter how I eq'd it, it would always sound like I had my wah on. I could never get a usable sound out of it. I kinda felt bad too because I asked my parents to get it for me for Christmas, so they basically wasted their money. I was kinda suprised that it was so bad because I bought a Keeley Blues Driver and it was awesome.

the worst sounding pedal i have ever owned is the marshall shredmaster. apart from the distortion itself sounding like crap (thin and muddy at the same time if you can believe that), the max volume of the pedal was lower than the direct signal from the guitar. completely useless.

My unmodded DS-1 sounds like crap....
I never use it. No idea why I still have it : )

Here's how I ended up getting it:

Grandma:So red devil, what would you like for Christmas? Something for guitar?
Me: I'd like a wah pedal. That would be awesome
    Grandma:Ok

    (Christmas now)

    Grandma:Open your present!
Me: Ooh a DS1. Does this make a wah sound?
Grandma: The guy at the music store told me it did.
Me: Oh, well It's a distortion pedal. yay....

    ;D

    Women will be women. ;)

If you can't play a tube amp real loud for sweet power tube overdrive, the DS-1 will clip your tone all up, but make it sound like a little screamer... :p I used to think it was a cool effect esp for the money, but it does squash/compress (ruin?) the tone.
    Better luck next year.

I'm learning and improving, slowly but surely. O0

Let's see, as an old relic from the late 60's /early 70's, I must say that the early fuzz boxes, like the Maestro, the Fuzz Face, etc. all are pretty dicey sounding. Yet they could get some ( maybe only one) decent tones as they started the whole stomp-box thing. But you had to really control them, for every good tone you could easily get many BAD sounds.

My vote for the worst - the Fender Blender, which I had for while and although it could get a wide variety of sounds, none were musically useful and all sounded like the kind of distortion we do NOT want in our tone.

A close second- the fuzz in a 70's Morley fuzz/wah. Sort of the worst features of all the 60's fuzzes in an indestructible package. Of all the pedal this would be the one made to survive being run over by the band van. Horrible sound!
