    Hmmmmm....
My standard reply when asked who my top three are, is Jimmy Page, Angus Young and whoever I've been listening to lately.

Audley Freed of Cry Of Love (Blues Rock, early nineties) and Black Crowes
    and
David Grissom (Joe Ely, John Mellencamp, Storyville)
are both playing with the touring band for the Dixie Chicks (GAWD!!!) but they did some good stuff.

The other night I saw Alvin Youngblood Hart, a Blues gunslinger with a tendency toward the earliest blues. What a show!!!
Got a chance to talk to him for awhile, very cool.

Yes, I'd have to agree that Andy Latimer and Bill Nelson are Great Favourites of mine at any time.

So....I suppose my list (predictably) would read something like this....allowing for the fact that 2 have already been mentioned.

    Andy Powell.(Wishbone Ash)
Laurie Wisefield.(Home,Wishbone Ash,Tina Turner and "We Will Rock You")
    John Jorgenson.(Hellecasters and Solo Artist)
    Gwyn Ashton.(Solo Artist)
Ben Granfelt. (Ben Granfelt Band, Wishbone Ash,)

But the list is ever evolving of course. Ask me again in an hour or so?
You'll notice that a certain trend develops here.....These Guys are ALL Melodic Players.

It depends on my mood....sometimes I like semi-hard music, other times I want quiet stuff. And I listen to a variety of stuff from rock, to country, to blues.

Dave Gregory seemed to have the reputation as the guitar virtuoso in XTC but when you listen to "Books Are Burning" from "Nonsuch", where he and Andy trade solos, you realise just how good and inventive AP is. O0

I read an interview one time where Andy Partridge said he doesn't really know chords, he just makes "little triangular shapes" on the fretboard. Something like that.

    Top 5 Guitarists
    1. Steve Hackett/Andy Latimer/Mike Holmes from IQ/Steven Rothery from Marillion/David Gilmour
    2. Jimi Hendrix
    3. Jimmy Page
    4. Alex Lifeson
    5. Andy Summers/The Edge

I know that first one contains five guitarists, but when it comes to electric guitar playing, Hackett, Gilmour, Latimer, Rothery, and Holmes are cut from the same cloth. They all play those melodic sustaining leads that I love.

I like Hendrix because he's got soul. And I like how he blends rhythm and lead.

Jimmy Page has come up with some pretty good guitar parts on both electric and acoustic. However, I often feel embarrassed for him when I see how sloppy he is live.

I like how Alex Lifeson fills space with interesting chords and his '80s work has interesting atmospheric solos.

Andy Summers and the Edge that there were other interesting things you could play on guitar besides overamplified blues licks.

    Page

    Alex Lifeson

    Michael Schenker

    Vernon Reid

I can't belive Schenker gets left off of so many lists! Played guitar for the early Scorpions, UFO, and recently the Michael Schenker Group. I swear, search "Michael Schenker Into The Arena" on Youtube, you will not be disappointed!

Then, Vernon Reid from Living Color. One of the most underrated guitarsts ever!
