So I just went to the Gibson Website to shop for a 'new' SG Standard.... that being the small pickguard and a pair of humbuckers. To my surprise and disappointment, not only could I NOT find one in black, but the only red editions they had were listed as 'Sold Out'! How dumb is that? No, I don't want P-90s or a stop/bridge or a 'custom' color or finish, and No, I don't want the batwing pickguard or a vibrato tailpiece!! I just want a new version of what I've been playing for 50+ yesrs!! Seriously Gibson... what are you thinking?

Yeah it looks kind of sparse for SGs right now. I searched Sweetwater and the only small pickguard one they had was in TV yellow. And Musician's Fiend only had one in Silver and one in Sunburst. Not sure what's going on with the small pickguard SG Standards right now. Might be just a supply chain issue and they'll be more later? :hmm:

Yeah, I prefer the small pickguard, too.

It seems Gibson has gone back and forth over the years with the Standards. Some years the Standard will have the small pickguard, other years it will have the batwing. I realize the original SG had the small guard. But, yeah, the current Gibson website shows different lines: Exclusives, Original, and Modern (there is also the Artist line, but it has no Standard model). Each of these three lines has a model called a "Standard", but not all are available in the same colors and have different pickguard styles, so I get the frustration.

Admittedly, the Custom which was mentioned earlier may be much more than you'd like to spend, but it sure does look like a sweet guitar.

2017-2018 Standard 61 Stopbar SG's fit the bill, you might locate an ebony version for a better price than a SG Custom :)

I did, I have a 2018 that checks off all your boxes .

I have been looking at the Gibson exclusive ebony guitars for almost a year and as we speak all are sold out but one model. a black and gold SG.

First off, nice guitar!

But, to reinforce the point, I know the OP is specifically looking for a new guitar. I really do understand that, but there are some real gems to be found in the used market.

That's a little bit disappointing to hear. I mean, I am not in the market for a guitar (except I am mildly entertaining building a V from a kit), but it still makes one wonder

I think it's highly unlikely that they discontinued the models listed as out of stock on their website.

But it's a bit silly to assume you will be ale to buy the exact same guitar you could 50 years ago at any given moment. But it's a reissue of the 1961 Standard, not a 1975 (50 years old). They didn't even offer a stopbar on the 1961 SG/LP Standard that model is replicating, which makes that expectation even more silly.

I thought the OP might have been looking for boring cherry. Ebony is not only unavailable, it’s been discontinued:

The Ebony finish was a 2021-2022 Gibson website exclusive. It's never been that popular a finish for the SG. It wasn't even offered on the SG until 1980, so it wouldn't really make sense on the '61 Standard.

I gotta say though, it's funny to hear people calling Heritage Cherry "boring" while demanding the incredibly unique option of... Black?
