To me, dark burgundy tort (not red) or black would look good and keep it in the Gibson aesthetics camp. Cream or mint green would also be cool, but take things toward the Fender aesthetics. It's all about what you like.
I'm not sure either what G. Clark's Epiphone is. The headstock looks like on recent Epis, but the body, especially the color, fading, etc. make me wonder what it is. Looks and sounds great though. I would't mind and Epiphone like that.
I never tried them on an SG but did so on a Jaguar. Even then it was too dark and muffled for my taste, although Jags are known to be bright and jangly.
+1 on let your dad help you with the process, especially choice of materials and the process. He might be used to a different set of compatible materials (filler, primer/base, paint, clear coat) - go with whatever your dad thinks should be used.
There's more than one way to do this, but for that specific one, I would:
1. Sand with 400, fill the grain and sand until smooth. Repeat i necessary. (Grain fillers come in a few basic colors, but can be tinted further).
2. Spray some shellack to seal the body. It will also prevent unwanted...
I used both, it's the same thing. The spray can one might be thinned down a bit, but has a really good nozzle, sprays evenly and does not clog. The one from a large can I tinted and sprayed it using a Preval spray unit. If you have a spray gun, I'd say get the can and some lacquer thinner and...
I have used Minwax Lacquer (gloss - red label), which is an acrylic lacquer in several projects. I like it a lot. It goes to full gloss with some work, it cures much faster than traditional nitro but it feels the same to touch. It is compatible with nitro and poly (if applied over them)...
Yes, maple neck, a bit stronger than mahogany.
Thanks! Minwax lacquer (gloss / red label), I have done other guitars with it in the past, so I'm familiar with it. When done right, one can achieve a mirror gloss with it. I tinted it a bit with amber and gold brown, to emulate a yellowing of the...
Just a few weeks ago GC had them on sale for $599, so I got one. It arrived with very obvious signs of wear. I called and was told that it was probably a floor model as the warehouse was closed by inspectors due to GC not being an essential business. Long story short, was given a discount that...
That's a great project! With a solid mahogany (no veneer) body and good pickups, it makes it worth it to not only pursue, but take it seriously. I am looking forward to seeing the progress.
Last evening I ordered a Fulltone OCD Ge, never had an OCD but had a few Fulltone pedals, and still own a Fulldrive. I listened to a few Youtube demos and read some mixed reviews, mainly positive. I kind of know what to expect, but just like with every other pedal, you'll never know until you...
