Get some affordable Alnico2 pickups from GFS, or spend a little more for the Golden Age from Stewmac.

I never wanted an SG, it never even crossed my mind to buy one until I couldnt afford the LP I wanted so I figured the SG was the next best thing....
Thats not normal, the toggle switches between pickups and in the middle is both pickups. Put the switch in the middle and tap on each pickup...
Mini humbuckers are your only drop in solution but if you dont like them your only options are route the guitar for humbuckers or sell the guitar.
Usually aftermarket covers have measurements listed, measure your pickups. :yesway:

Maybe pickups parallel with the strings is not so important.
The pickups are stiff as a rock in the pickguard holes, stuck in that position forever.
