I wanted to give a report/review of my new/used/pre-owned 02' SG Standard. I gigged it for the first time this weekend.
1. It's super light compared to what I'm used to playing. This made the combined practice and set much more enjoyable for me.
2. The tone is pure rock. I tend to think I...
I'm going to re-attach the pup covers the next time I restring. I want it to be stock. BTW, I gigged this SG for the first time this weekend... I'm still shocked at how light this guitar is compared to my LP's, and yet it doesn't suffer at all in the tone department. It's a full on rock machine ;).
Nice. Exactly like mine, but the prior owner removed the PUP covers. I'll add them back the next time I restring. Thanks for the pic... she's a beauty.
After several hours of rehearsals I'm starting to like the lighter SG :). My shoulder feels much better than normal... hmmm. I could get used to this. I'm loving the tones out this guitar. It's blowing my uneducated and unsubstantiated theory that a guitar has to be heavy to have "mojo...
Last week our rhythm guitarist set up right before a gig and fired up his old school epiphone amp (there's the first issue) and it had the most horrific sound... ugh. He's in a panic. I'm laughing because I have been telling him to scale his hyper-complicated pedal rig down... it's noisy too. He...
I traded for this SG through Harmony Central. I had never played an SG. I was shocked at how lite it was. I've been playing it for hours over the last couple of days and I'm getting used to it. I just thought there might be a heavier model.
What about the Supremes? They just look beefier.
I had an 87' Strat Plus for 15 years. I never bonded with that guitar. I tried everything, new pups, pickguard, pots, added a bone nut, even painted it... still never did it for me. When I traded it off, I didn't even flinch.
I just acquired an 02' SG Standard... love it! The first thing that struck me was how light it is! I'm used to heavier solid mahogany guitars i.e. LP, Ibanez Artist, etc.
Is there a "heavier" version of the SG? Just curious. Don't get me wrong, my 02' SG has plenty of mojo. Thanks in...
You might try scanning the guitars for sale forum at Harmony Central:

They have several SG's listed there. I've traded several guitars through that site and have had great luck so far.
Good Luck!
Jim
They're growing on me. It's just that they are a bit "messy" looking due to the fact that they were not meant to be uncovered. The prior owner had to detach them by heating up the solder. They still look ok, but they have an unfinished look to me. Yes, I'm picky ;).
Yes, you noticed. The prior owner installed a set of Ping tuners. Very stable. I'm back and forth on the look of the uncovered PUPS. I'll give it a week or two before I do anything drastic. For now, I'm just going to play it and enjoy it as is.
This is my first SG. It's an 02' Standard and she is a player. The PUPS are original but the prior owner removed the covers. I will probably re-install them if I don't replace these PUPS altogether. The first thing that shocked me when I unpacked this guitar was how light it was! I'm used to...
Here's what I found out about my 2004 SG Standard:
Your guitar was made at the
Nashville Plant, TN, USA
June 7th, 2002
Production Number: 127
Not a problem for me. The guitar plays great. I don't think the prior owner knew it was an 02'. Thanks for the info!
I just traded for a 2002 SG Standard. It came by UPS yesterday and I got to spend about one hour playing before having to scamper off and MC a huge fund raiser in our city. Today, I'll be going over her in detail, making adjustments and setting her up... can't wait to get started! I'll post pics...
