Did I stumble on a small tube amp that actually can do it all?

Seems I'm quite late to this topic...Don't do the boards much any more ;) I've been a big fan of the Nomad for years. Tried one out after hearing about it on another forum years ago. Ended up getting a Nomad 55 1x12 from the Hollywood Mesa store and putting a TC-Electronics G-Force in the...

    Joe Walsh fans?

Loved James Gang since about 1970. I noodle around with Walk Away and Funk 49 frequently with the LP or ES335 and the JTM-45. Old school tone. Joe is a great basic player and fun to watch!

You Have To Have Something To Fall Back On!

Re: You Have To Something To Fall Back On! Major props to the Doc! I don't think most folks appreciate how hard it is to get a Ph.D. The math alone involved in an astrophysics doctorate degree would crush most mortals! Of course, it's almost pure math anyway :notworthy:

Experiment with new pickups? And a rant about tone clips.

Agreed. These guys: http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/Strat_Pickup_Sound_Clips_W1.cfm do a terrific job on Strat pickups with standardized riffs and equipment. Too bad others don't do as well.

    Mesa Nomad?

I don't know, but I was wondering why your GC would have one for you to try since they went out of production after the first year (I think)? BTW, if you run into a Nomad 45, I understand 2nd-hand that they sound vastly different than the 55, so you may not be able to use that as a comparison...

    Mesa Nomad?

Only you can decide if it has the gain you are after. I'm not into metal anything, so I can't help. I can say that my 1x12 Nomad 55 works fine in the bedroom; it has a great master volume. No, it isn't as good as cranked, but it does well. You probably already know that the Nomad gets very...

    WCR

I agree that Jim Wagner is a great guy and his PUs have a fine following. I put a set of his Darkbursts in my LP Std. and the bridge is brighter than I like. Has kind of a higher output (like a resonant peak) on the G, B and E plain strings. I went to an Alnico 2 magnet and went back to the...

    Inside The Dream Rig

A few volts to the normal full B+ (near 400V) less the Vds sat (couple volts) of the FET.

    Inside The Dream Rig

While we wait for the official word on this... Power Scaling basically involves lowering or adjusting the B+ on the output tubes. This allows pre-amp and power-amp distortion at tolerable SPLs. My guess is that this is the FET used to drop the B+ to the finals. I can't see enough of the other...

    My "Dream Rig" Is Reality!!

Very cool :coolsmiley: I'm not so sure how well sound bites over our computers *really* transmit the true vibe of equipment, but I for one would just love to hear that little monster of yours :) Very happy for you!

Buzzin'. And not the good kind.

So help us out here... If you disconnect the guitar cord at the amp, does the buzz go away? With No input cord, can you turn up the amp and get little or no buzz? If the above are true, then it is likely noise pick-up in your cord and/or guitar equipment. If it still makes noise with no...

    Blues Junior?

Sage advice. Even though I provided the definitive link for BJ tweaks and I'm an electronics and speaker tweaker in the truest sense, my BJ has remained Stock. Not saying this is your cup of tea but I am agreeing with Lexy that it is worth a long listen and evaluation before planning tweaks.

    Frampton on Soundstage

Caught Peter Frampton on Soundstage on Public TV in the Los Angeles area last night. One of my favorite sounds is with him in Humble Pie at the Filmore East Live. Even with that previous affection for his sound, I underestimated the man: what a tone! Those Gibsons and the crushing Marshalls...

    Blues Junior?

BJ was the first amp I bought when I started playing electric guitar again as an adult (about 1999). Despite having since bought a Boogie, DRRI, and building a JTM45 clone, I will not get rid of the BJ! It's just so nice, small and wonderful that it will always be a keeper. Lexy is very right...

    Plexi help?

There are some smart folks here who can advise, especially one sage Lexi who's owned about everything there is to try :P If you already have decided on the type of amp and tone you want, I'd suggest reseaching reliability and alternatives. I seem to run into more than a few people who have...

    WORST guitar solo...

+1 on almost anything by Neil Young. Another stinker is Roger McGuinn (real name Jim) of the Byrds doing the solo on 8 miles High. I swear he was just faking it!

The "Peter Green/Gary Moore" Bare Knuckles Pickup Set

Outstanding! Lexie, is there any significance (secret sauce?) in the fact that the neck pick up is rotated 180 degrees from stock? Perhaps it is only my 2 Gibsons? In other words, my neck pickups have the pole adjust screws on the side that is closest to the neck? Inquisitive minds want to learn :)
