    Primal Scream the band.???

I love Primal Scream, but their albums have been hit or miss. They started out trying to copy the Stones and had limited success until they decided to integrate electronic music. Screamadelica is absolutely phenomenal. Then they decided to try the Stones thing again ("Rocks") and everyone hated...

Lefty Gibson SGJ's at Sam Ash for $399.00!

Sam Ash is also selling them through Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BV01CC8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00BV01CC8&linkCode=as2&tag=lefty02-20&linkId=JQ2NFUCZ37SHYMGC Wow, looks like they're only down to white and vintage burst already.

    Best sub $100 headphones?

On the far far bottom of the budget end, I just got a pair of Monoprice 8323s based on this TapeOp review. Not sure how they'd stack up to the $100 range but for a pair of cans you can toss in a gym bag and don't want to worry about breaking or losing, they're right on the money.

    Which tube and why?

And you'd expect that; 6550s require more bias voltage and thus are harder to drive to full power (and distortion) and they're also beam tetrodes instead of true pentodes so you'd expect a sharper transition between clean and distortion (though the global NFB loop will dominate and make either...

    Which tube and why?

^^ This. The biggest difference between one tube and the next is how much voltage swing it needs from the preamp (and phase inverter) before it breaks up. El84s need very little voltage drive, while 6L6s require a ton. 6V6 and EL34 oddly enough require about the same, though obviously you get...

Amps - whatcha playin' these days?

You actually get better dispersion throughout the room this way; keep it up!

    Help me spend $1200

If you've already got a silverface Super, I'd say you're pretty much set in the amp department. Unless you wanted something Marshally or Voxy. And if you're interested in the Vintage Modified Vibrolux for the Marshall channel, I'd buy an old Traynor first. It'll hold its value at least as well...

Has anyone run 250K pots in an SG?

Yeah, the math behind pickups is kind of a mess. Check out this spreadsheet, it makes things a lot easier to see: www.harryj.net/voltone.xls

Amps - whatcha playin' these days?

My main is a 135W Twin Reverb that I've been modding. Still has really lush cleans, but it starts breaking up around 4 on the volume. Once I finish up the bias mod trem and cut out the extra 5 miles of wire they used, it should be good to go. Number 2 is a Trainwreck Rocket (AC30 Top Boost...

Step away from the crack pipe...

Those are Solen film caps, but yeah, definitely illustrates the problem. Motor run caps are generally even bigger. Fortunately they're available with the terminals aligned radially so you can put them outside the chassis with a capacitor clamp like the good(?) old days. Here's a more...

My SG is Shocking Me -Literally

These "ground polarity" switches date back to the two-prong days. They slap a capacitor from the chassis to one or the other incoming lines from the outlet (live or neutral). Commonly known as "death caps" these days; it's best to not use them and (when feasible) remove them. Even...

Step away from the crack pipe...

Have you looked into motor run caps? Film, of course; not electrolytic motor start caps. Somewhat more expensive than electrolytics and the size is a huge factor, but you'll never have to replace them. I'm going to use those to fix up a '52 Stromberg-Carlson amp and I imagine they'd work well...

Heck yes! Got my 2013 SGJ tonight a day early!

Corian's not bad nut material. If you ask around at kitchen fabrication places, you might be able to get a sink cutout for free and have a lifetime supply of nut blanks. Tusq is better, IMHO, but you can make a very respectable nut out of corian. The PLEK does cut the nut slots too shallow...

Step away from the crack pipe...

Caps are caps even in amps. Why doesn't a Marshall replica sound like a vintage amp? The vintage amp has had 40+ years for components to drift. Why doesn't a Marshall replica sound like a brand new unit did 40 years ago? It probably does. Plus we don't have the high-quality Mullard EL34s...

What delay pedals are you using?

I use a Behringer Vintage Time Machine (EHX Memory Man Clone) and a Madbean Cave Dweller (project you have to build). Both are on the short end of the maximum delay time. One thing you might want to watch out for is "tails" - do you want the repeats to continue after you switch the pedal off...

Before you go buying new pickups

I agree with the original premise - if you're looking for subtle to moderate changes in your tone, different pick material (as well as different playing technique and different setup) can make quite a difference. You can achieve radical changes in tone by changing pickups though - no amount of...

    "Best" Chinese Gibson Guitars

They do, but it's completely underground. There are no bars or clubs or venues like that; it's completely underground. No recording studios either! There was an article in Tape Op a while back about a producer who started hearing about some of these bands and then spent a couple years in China...

Left-handed players: How do you feel about left handed guitars?

Looks? Pretty much the same as righties to me as far as aesthetics go, just a mirror image or an enantiomer (for the nerds). Being on stage with an opposite-handed guitarist is tricky though. I prefer standing stage right so I'm not in a sword fight all night. I think I've shared this...

    Clear SG anyone?

A buddy of mine got a Galveston acrylic Flying V in a trade. It weighs as much as my amp. Electrical Guitar Company - Electrical Guitar Company | The finest aluminum instruments These guys specialize in aluminum guitars, though they do make acrylics bodies as well (and wood sometimes!)...

    "Best" Chinese Gibson Guitars

Knock-off guitars, I mean, at least someone has an interest in decent customer service. Nobody would buy an Xaviere or SX if they were complete pieces of junk, and people would stop shopping at GuitarFetish or Rondo if they knew they were getting garbage. Everyone involved is interested in...
