Hi folks, I have just bought a very nice 2000 sg junior, the model with the batwing pickguard.
I truly love this guitar, it is perfect for the music I play and really couldn't be happier.
I have a question for you sg experts: the fingerboard doesn't seem to be rosewood, it is way too smooth but for sure it not baked maple since it is more than 15 years old. What kind of wood can it be? It seems that I cannot upload pics, they are too heavy. Hope you can help me anyway.
    Thanks!

    Mimmo.

That is what I think it to be, but wanted to sure. Any chance that these guitars came wih ebony fretboard?

Welcome to da zoo Mimmo ! Ebony is dark with not much brown in it, and smooth.

Now you have to find a way to upload your pics. If not we can't really believe you have such a nice SG. :naughty:

I'm glad you really like the junior!

I think of sg juniors as pretty much the perfect guitar. For me anyways! With LP juniors a close second! :D

I'm pretty much obsessed with juniors. :dude:

    Nice guitar.

The fretboard kind of looks like might be either ebony or a very dark and worn / dirty rosewood in the photos. I'm not sure why Gibson would have used ebony for this model but it's possible

I'm guessing that the truss rod cover is aftermarket. They are usually single-ply black

Thank Dave, I didn't notice the truss rod cover. Actually I like it, maybe in the future I will change it but not now.
    Cheers!

Might be the same for the pickguard too. Not sure. My SG Junior with the large pickguard is a 2006 so it could be different, but the pickguard and truss rod cover are both single ply. That said I've never noticed a single ply black pickguard on an SG. Mine's white (the pickguard, that is; my TRC is single ply black). The engraving 'Junior' is definitely aftermarket

    Very usefull information Dave, thanks!
I love the look of this pickguard so for sure I won't change it, but I am intrigued by the truss rod. Decisons, decisions..

I am curious to see if someone can tell me 100% what wood is the fingerbord, pretty sure it is ebony but didn't know Gibson used it for juniors...

Won't swear to it, I'm not an expert, but it kinda looks like Richlite to me

As others have mentioned, they don't usually use ebony on jr models, but it is possible
