I see there is a Tsunami alert from this one too. They are still recovering from Christchurch a few years back, so lets hope the damage is minimal.

Now 7.8 magnitude after subsequent measurements and data.

And it's not just that single 7.8 quake either. There were and probably will continue to be, massive aftershocks in the 5 to 6.5 range.

Got to agree with that. My friend emigrated there many years ago but had his house condemned after the last quake!

I have a good friend in Paraparaumu. I hope they are all o.k.

Friends were way down south and didn't feel a thing. Good. They were supposed to go surfing. They postponed that for a little while.

My Group are on the North Island and felt it -- lost power a bit but nothing serious. Whew
