A question for Gibson historians ;-)

Hi all,

I am not sure where exactly to post this.

I have a question for you guys, as I have a hard time finding a consistent answer...

It is about the control knobs, especially the reflectors: What is the "correct" orientation for the markings when everything is set on 10 ?

Are the markings supposed to be parallel to the neck or perpendicular ?

That question is really for my own culture (I don't plan to change mine). I have seen both orientation on many different models/era.

I think it has more to do with how the words Volume and Tone are printed/inserted on the knobs. Some read roughly between 8 and 2, some don’t.

Thanks !

I guess I should have been more clear... my question is actually about what is the more accepted print/insertion ? I have different sets of reflectors on LPs and SG, and some of them have different position of the markings. Some have the markings aligned with the 0, some have other positions...

I am just curious :D

Thanks !
I guess there is the usual inconsistency with Gibson  .
Mine (the control's names) are perpendicular to the neck, but the 10 indeed points towards the bridge.

These are the ones I also got on my SG... it is just interesting to see that some productions/periods/etc. are not facing the 0 (like ta "Angus" model shown by Dan)

IMHO of course... none of the above.

Knobs ought to go to 11 (for volume)
The player can turn the knobs when installing them so they face any direction. The best direction for the maximum to face is toward the player's eye in the playing position. So you can see it in dim light.
Pointers may help in dim light, but I don't think they are necessary.
I think they would jab my fingers. So I don't have any.

I like knobs that don't say anything on them.
You can see above that I don't like a plastic washer that says
"Rhythm/Trouble" on it. Mine's made of ebony.
Sometimes I like knobs made of wood instead of plastic.
Some of those have only one mark, and I like that too.
If the knobs have words on them, then the player might fuss too much
about the printing or the font. I don't want to do that.

Least said, soonest mended IMHO.

I wanted Fender Amp knobs for my SG special
and they only go to 10 plus they are plastic...
and the printing goes between 2 and 8. *shrugs
I've also used the ebony knobs with one dot on them,
but I like the look of the Fender Amp Knobs better. Go figure.
I have them set so the maximum stop is facing my eye when
I'm playing.
