Hey guys,

I'm looking for a Special from the 60's. I'm in Australia and it's near impossible to find any here, I have found 1 for sale but the price was ridiculously high. I'm not after a mint guitar, knocks, blemishes etc don't bother me but I'm avoiding anything that's had breaks/cracks repaired.

I do want it to have original pups/electrics but if it's had replaced tuners, bridge I'm not fussed. What would you say is a fair price?

Thanks.

I've looked at a few online, $3k upwards will get me a decent one, some of the very clean ones are $5-6k.

The guy wanted $9000 for a 65.

The last ones I looked at in Nashville were about $3500 for red and $5000 for white.

Yeah, kind of what I was expecting. Thanks for the replies. Could you guys in the US drop a few store names for me that I should be checking?

My advice, buy one quick! Just a year or two ago it was easy to find a '60s sg jr just a bit more than $1k us.

Since then.....prices have been steadily moving upwards.
If you want one, I don't you won't find them getting any cheaper.

I almost bought one with an old headstock repair. Beat to hell and back '69 -- but original, and reasonably priced. Wish I'd bought it, too, since it was a player. I would definitely want to play one and really check it out first before buying, whatever its advertised condition.

Thanks for the replies. I've been eyeing a few off at that Chicago store, I've read good reviews of that place. I'll check out the other stores mentioned aswell.

There's a few places here in Oz that sell vintage stuff:
Rics Vintage Guitars Rics Vintage Guitars
and The Rock Inn The Rock Inn - welcome to the The Rock Inn - WA's best guitar shop, now online! in Perth are 2 that come to mind.
They often have 60s SGs in stock and are reasonably priced (at least by Australian standards).
Another is The Guitar Emporium in Albert Park, Mebourne. Australia's Premier Vintage Guitar Store! - Guitar Emporium

Thanks for the links mate.
