Pretty much any of their USA made amps are really good. Some of the cheaper valve amps don't impress me much, and I didn't like the recent Butcher amp much, but the JSX/XXX2, Classic, and 5150/6505 series amps are great.

I have a Mesa Express5:25 1x10. I traded a pedal for a 2x12 Extension cab so i got lots of goodness. The great thing about the Express is that its pretty much an everything amp. You get awesome cleans and delicious distortion and overdriven sound in the same amp. If you want a heavier Metal sound just put a pedal in the clean channel. works great.

My biggest issue with the express, believe it or not, was figuring out what pedals I would use with it. The dirty channels are so good you dont need alot of OD and distortion type pedals..I tried out a soul food and found out that the amp already does that well.

At first i used the 5 watt but i found it more compressed than i liked...25 watt mode was more for me..much more headroom. I also found that even tho I keep the volume down because of being in a small townhouse, the amp still sounds great at lower volumes.

Also you get what you pay for. Mesa amps are more expensive, but you get an amazing amp that can do almost everything you want with it. If you can, get one thats used...you won't be sorry i can tell you that...

Bottom line....if my amp blew up today i would have to buy another mesa to replace it.

That is very helpful, thank you! I have been reading that some prefer a higher wattage amp at low volumes if you can get one that does low volume well. I have never really went for a volume induced distortion and have depended on pedals and OD channels. Have you ever played a 5:50? Is the tone comparable with the 5:25 at the higher wattage settings?

I Don't think you will have a problem..those amps are designed to break up real well..even at low volumes. If nothing else; it will have even more headroom. I just tried out the 5 watt and 25 watt settings again..the 5 watt sounded dead..not my cup of tea at all. The 25 watt setting is way better.. no comparison really. If you get a mesa your going to have to rethink your pedals..you won't need as many.

I'll put a plug in here for Traynor amps, a great Canadian brand. They have amazing cleans.

Excellent new set up JohnnyGoo! Still one of my favorites, that Epi Valve Jr! I have one series 3 head that I'm keeping stock...slapped on top of a Marshall 1960b cab, and cranked, it sounds monsterous!
    Congrats!
