Does ordering the suggested tube upgrades BEFORE you get the amp indicate a toxic GAS condition?

Only if you get the tube upgrade with a Mercury Magnetics Output Tranny upgrade to go with it... :naughty:

I'd need some convincing that Mercury trannies are worth the money they are charging. :(

Google results 1-7 would disagree with you.

Since you brought the subject up...
They are pricey, but they are well built and perform as designed. What seemed odd to me, that the examples I dealt with as far as Power Trannies are concerned, the primary wires are thinner gauge than just about anybody elses... old or new. I figured they know what they're doing, and I've never heard of their stuff failing. They also do big-page advertising in the mags... and you know what that means.
I have 2 amps that had their trannies in them. On the first amp, a '81 JCM800 2x12 Combo, it was upgraded by a very well known tech to Mercury Magnetics PT and OT. That was fine until I introduce myself to the world of "Modding Myself". I then discovered that the MM's PT was design to produce much higher voltages than the stock Drakes. The amp was definitely punchier with a tighter low end. I convinced myself that I wanted the lower voltages. MM didn't offer this. I went with a PT sold by Marstran, which has his trannies made by Heyboer to his specs. And they are a little less money. I still was curious, and decided to replace the MM OT too, with what Marstran had to offer. For me, it was nirvana with the Marstran combo. The MM's, I would categorize as the "modern" sound, as oppose to a more "vintagy" sound.
The second amp, is an JCM800 clone I built, sourcing from raw parts. On this one, I had yet another MM OT that I eventually replace with an OT made by Magnetics Components (not to be confused with Mercury Magnetics) for the same reasons as the previous amp. The PT and the Choke for this one is also made by Magnetic Components. Mag Components is by far, and I mean by far, much more reasonable to purchase and their product is solid.
Oh yeah... my 2 cents

Had a chance to fire up a Fender Deluxe Reverb Friday. Had the Casino Coupe with me; nice combination. Almost as sweet as a Princeton Reverb. Bad case of gas induced there.

That's a comment I've noticed frequently in build threads around the internet. As you suggest, perhaps they are going for a "modern" sound.

Don't look to me, for a path. I lead you down a road of financial ruin, unless you've got some cash to burn...

Wow! That is quite an unreal collection!

The only thing that is keeping my amp GAS from really catching fire is maintenance. Last night I has a temporary but substantial drop off in volume on my Marshall. I assume it needs new power tubes. I must now learn to bias this amp. Now, I love to learn, but the constant thread of death takes away from the fun of such intellectual pursuits. I have my new Peavey coming today, and having problems with both my current amps is detracting from the excitment a bit.

Oh yeah. If I can't get a good sound out of any of my guitars through that backline, I should wrap it up and call it a day.
