Many time we see Angus with a old Black SG. Anyone here know what is the year of this black sg
He's playing a 1979/80 here, with the side mounted jack and selector switch above the knobs.
anyone know wich was the first angus SG ? i read on the net different info...
Most of what I have read (and seen) seems to indicate it was the 1970. Here's an early pic of him with it:
i read 1968 and 1970 .....2 different source. and it was walnut and not cherry.. ?
Sorry, thought the pic was c.1981. This one looks like a late 90s. His first I recall was like a 1970/71 Standard.
I'd guess 95-00
ok 70 71 walnut is his first sg. thanks |!
An other question about Angus' SG guitars, what's this model?
I've seen him with that guitar many times. I got no proof, but I believe it is an SG Custom, probably mid-late '70's, that he removed the middle pickup from, so he was forced to use the batwing 'guard to cover the hole that it left.
That is a TON of energy contained in a 5'2" 100lb package!
ROCK THE FOOK ON ANGUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great pics of Angus.
His first and main SG in the early years appears to be a walnut 1970 model.
I've seen pics of from the back and it has a volute.
That is a walnut SG custom (probably 1970) that he used as his backup in the early days. He can be seen playing it on the Let There Be Rock movie.
The middle PU has been removed and a replacement pickguard installed without the middle PU route.
It can be a bit confusing because he started using a late 60s or 1970 model without the chrome maestro in the early days also.
I believe by this time he probably had a few SGs.
I saw him on the Back in Black tour with what appeared to be the original from the early days with the chrome maestro.
I vividly remember him getting the EXACT tone he got on the albums.
I thought the volute appeared in 71'... ?
His first ever SG was a 1969 SG. He said so himself, so did Gibson and it even has a little cameo in The School of Rock movie (Jack Black is using a 69' SG).
Anyways, his first ever SG with the Lightning bolts was NOT his first SG, it was another one, most likely a 70s. His first one is the infamous one with no pup cover in the bridge postion and duct tape. Also it looks like it's been through wars!
Here is an interesting read:
Oh that IS a good link Thanks Doo!
There's a lot of misinformation out there about his SGs. For example, Angus thought his first SG was a '69 because that's what people told him, but it was really a '70-'71 based on the Volute, shallow bevels and other features. The Black one that's his main guitar now (first few pics) is a real early '60s SG that was repainted before he got it.
Also, there's a theory (that I subscribe to) that his first SG IS the one with lightning bolts. See, he's said many times that his first SG's neck was so warped by sweat that it was destroyed, and yet he's also said that he still records with it to this day. If you look closely at the original lightning bolt SG (he has a couple now), you can see it has very shallow bevels like his first SG, which is unlike JayDee's typical SG bodies (JayDee built it for him). So it seems JayDee put an entirely new neck on it, although curiously with a Gibson logo (maybe Angus wanted this because it was his first Gibson). His first SG can now be determined by the pickup ring around the bridge pickup, whereas his copies have no rings.

Notice this copy has no PUP rings:
I read (in the rolling stone I think) that because of the damage caused by years of being played by angus young he has fully or partially retired his orignal sg he used in the studio for all they're big classic albums, but that to record the new album he sought out a lightly used sg from the same factory production run.
